How to vectorize in photoshop - DPChallenge Forums

Has anyone done this? A client has asked me to provide him with a vector version of the image I created for him. I do not have Illustrator.

What kind of image is it? Areas of flat color? Photographic detail?

Just a jpg. He wants the who image as a vector.

I've seem some tutorials and it's waaaay too complicated that I can tell, and told him so. So he's going to do it himself.

But I'd like to know in case someone else asks for it (no one else ever has).

Vectors start with outlines and fills (which can be gradients). The Paths in Photoshop are similar to the vectors drawn by Illustrator.

The problem is that the paths in Illustrator are defined by equations which can be scaled pretty much at will without degradation.

By contrast, images in Photoshop (and from cameras) are described by assigning color values to individual pixels (like tiles in a mosaic), and when you increase the size you either enlarge each individual pixel (creating a coarse or "pixelated" image) or you create new pixels with color values derived from the surrounding pixels, often leading to a loss of detail.

It's hard to turn a photo into a true vector image.

Yeah, it sounds like a full-time job.

I hope this request is not going to be a trending thing....

ETA - I enlarged a jpg to 8 feet, and while there was a bit of loss, the detail even at that size is amazing.

So I'm not sure what vectoring it might have accomplished....

You can modify how the effect is used. That's a VERY nifty tool. As far as editing the vector paths go, you don't HAVE to, that's up to the client. The only people who'd ask for this are folks who want to work with vector graphics, eh? Anyway, they are fun. That action opens up a whole WORLD of different ways to approach Extend4ed Editing :-) Plus he has some other really cool ones at the bottom, all inexpensive. A real treasure trove...

If it's any consolation I'm going to have to try and figure it out too, and I've been using Photoshop since before Adobe bought it ... :-(
