There has been much moan about challenge topics. But I think this is more fixable than you may believe.

It starts by making more suggestions. I'm going to do that myself. Maybe your dislike of my suggestions will inspire your own! That's fine!! Diversity, baby!

But you don't always have to come up with stuff from thin air. Consider going into old challenge suggestion threads and bumping them up. I'm pretty sure that Ursa Major aka BM would rather use your suggestions than have to make them up or dig them up, and be the sole target of thy wrath.

When there are more suggestions available, and diverse suggestions, then you will see a good balance of different kinds of challenges. i.e., there will almost always be at least one thing you want to shoot for.

I will be the change I want to see in the site, and start doing these things myself. Join me in this last ditch effort bold new adventure!!!

another thing, it helps if you make a little effort and follow the format:

Thanks for a very timely suggestion, Don. If I had anything to add, it would be that we TRY to strike a balance between 3 broad categories of challenges:

1. Subject: This would be stuff like "Wildlife", "Landscapes", "Blue", "In the Marketplace", and so forth.
2. Technique: Things like "High Contrast", "Rule of Thirds", "Long Exposure", "Macro", "Portrait", stuff that involves how we use our cameras or our software.
3. Concept: This category is for intangible stuff, ideas, etc like "Politically Incorrect", "Ordinary", "Sorrow", "Joy", less definable concepts as it were.

Obviously, sometimes a topic won't fall cleanly into one of those categories, such as "In the Style of: David Muench" (is that technique or a concept) but this doesn't really matter; the categories are just a good way to keep challenges variegated.

Also bear in mind that many (if not most) of the really relevant Technique Challenges have been run before, often many times, and there's nothing wrong with that; even professional concert musicians still practice their scales :-) DPC has been around for what, almost 16 years now? It's just not possible for every challenge going forward to be unique, or at least not if we don't want them all to be "niche" challenges, so to speak.

Gee Whiz, haven't quite gone yet, but I know many of us would take the wide view of an entry which may not seem to meet the challenge on first view, but think on and see
why it does .an Artistic approach can mean thinking outside the Box..and still meet the challenge

Dr.Confuser, here's the forum area for challenge suggestions. :-)

p.s. - Extended editing already allows text.

Been gone too long, I guess, or too busy. Maybe Bear or SC member or some kind soul could put them where they belong. ;)

LOL, or the one who suggests them? Easy enough to do.

The thing of it is, each one needs to be its own thread in "Challenge Suggestions" so people can comment to them individually. If *I* did the legwork, they'd all be Bear_Music suggestions, which isn't giving credit where credit is due, so maybe you can open two windows and do a copy/paste of each topic into it's own thread over there? Shouldn't take too long. When that's done I can disappear this post and it's all copacetic :-)

We DO appreciate the suggestions, you're a hero, dude :-)

I Have commented on and off over the last few years with very little feedback on my
comments and wonder if it is worth continuing so..
would like to know if it is worth my while

Yeah, Nick, it is nice to know that our efforts bear fruit. That our kindness and attention are appreciated. People here do enjoy getting comments, but the warmth that's actually been created is rarely reflected back to the creator. It's not a lack of appreciation, just that smiles are evanescent and if you're not there in person you don't even know that they've occurred. I planned to comment on your comment on my "In the Spirit of Kiwinick" entry. It made me smile, which bubbled up and lingered, as I enjoyed it several times over. Sometimes you have to take it on faith. It's actually a wonderful feeling to give freely without any expectation of reward or acknowledgement. To just express yourself and be done with it. Sorry, I'm getting preachy here. I have seen comments by people saying that they enjoy your comments, and I promise you that that is the case.

Dude!

We honored you with your own challenge!

Sit down! LOL!!!

Seriously, I know what you mean, but as far as I know, the only way to do so is to make the extra effort to thank someone either through the comments, or PM them.

If you reply on the image, at least the helpful box can be ticked as an acknowledgement.

Well, I posted them to Challenge suggestions, but there seems to be a problem since the title didn't always come through. So there's some duplication. Sorry about that.
