I have another question....(don’t roll your eyes!!!)

Is anyone here familiar with Ouray, Colorado? I’m going to do my nieces engagement photos there...I’ve been there but years ago and I was hoping someone would know the building or areas around town (parks, etc) that could give a good backdrop for pictures.

Hi Janine - Sounds like a fun project. One place that looks inviting is the Ouray Hot Springs pool.

here's a video from Gary Fong systematically shooting with a lot of different light modifiers from different manufacturers.

In his test, the Rogue Flashbender (reflector) also does very well: https://rogueflash.com/collections/rogue-flashbenders

I just ordered the Lightsphere...I'll give it a try in a couple weeks (or sooner)...now to watch more tutorials about the SB-900 (I need them in "simple" language...like "turn on flash"...lol)

Thank you!!!

On the YouTubes, look up The Slanted Lens and devour all of his excellent lighting tutorials for using flash. Get yourself a flash diffuser like the Gary Fong Lightsphere, who also has excellent tutorials on his web site. Samys Cameras has classes on wedding photography and the use of flash that are well worth the cost.

Wow.... Make sure you practice with the light sphere. I thought you could just put it on and shoot. I really screwed up reception photos for the wedding in October because I practiced one and thought I was fine.

Oh, and the flash was really nice for full flash since the sky was a white overcast. The outdoor photos with the flash as fill were much better than just the all natural light outdoor shots.

Question...

If you had to choose between the

Sigma 70-200 f/2.8

Vs

Tamron 70-200 f/2.8

Which one do you think is best?

I don’t have enough $$$ to buy the Nikon...but I could make either of those two work...OR should I just wait it out n get the Nikon eventually?

I purchased the Tamron 70-200 G2 just before the holidays with the 2X teleconverter. On my profile, RGP_0186-10-Edit is a crop of an image taken with the Tamron.
I would highly recommend.

Just a thought: Lens Rentals or Lens Pro to Go would rent you one or both.

I’ve looked into it and it would cost me $200 (total) for 2 rentals...I’m more the tight wad cheapskate financially responsible person that would rather use that $$$ towards the lens...sigh...

Maybe I’ll look at renting it a shorter time period...

Thom Hogan's review of the SB-900 has several comments about using the controls/menus. Review. Useful in a realm where tutorials often skip the basics and jump directly into advanced topics.

Yeh, I see that they seem to have three of the newer VRII, and all "Bargain" grade, whereas they also have three of the older VRI, all "Excellent." What's up with that? FWIW, KEH grades *very* conservatively, so some Bargain lenses are actually not bad at all.
If you are interested in a lens that is graded Bargain, try giving them a call and see if they can get you info/pics on the condition of the actual item. I've done this in the past with them, admittedly a long time ago. Unless they've changed their policy, they also have a good inspection/return policy.
Keep in mind that there's a reason that both Canon and Nikon updated their 70-200/2.8 offerings; today's high-resolution sensors tax these optics to a far greater degree than older cameras. If I did not have a 70-200 today and were looking to buy one, I wouldn't consider the older versions for that reason; I'm using a 30Mpx body, not the 6 to 8 MPx that was standard when the V1 lenses hit the market. I'll temper that remark by saying that I have high expectations for lenses. I don't tolerate mediocre performance well.
In Nikon's case, the VRII was just replaced in 2016, and the VRII was a highly regarded lens. If I were a Nikon shooter looking for a good value, I'd look at a used copy of that lens. I just searched Fredmiranda.com's buy/sell board, and very nice VRIIs seem to be going for about $1400 (there are at least two currently available), so the bargain pricing on the KEH units is really that.

All good things to chew on...I knew the one VR (no II/III) was the older version but I wasn't sure about the others. I'll call KEH & I'll look at Fredmiranda.com...I was trying to think of the last website earlier today...I can swing about $1,000-1,400 ish...

Is this the newer G2 version? 'Cause that's the one you should get.

Well now I'm confused (doesn't take much these days) I was looking in B&H

I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on the

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII Lens - when I see this UPDATED MODEL AVAILABLE

And it takes me to this lens...

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR Lens (NOT VRII) which I thought was the "newest n greatest" lens available

Can you help me understand this?

02/12/2018 11:16:52 PM · #46
Well so far no luck with finding the lens...still looking but not a sweet enough deal...yet...

So when I was out in Colorado this last time I saw my niece and did some of their engagement photos. Here is what I have finished...any critiques are welcome...I have thick skin...

They are very happy with these...me...meh...I see problems.. the Sun is sooooo intense!!! We didn’t start until after 2:00 I think...Trevor COULD NOT OPEN HIS EYES!!! Ugh!! I should have found shad to shoot in...but I just didn’t know the area...sigh

Question: when you use an external flash HOW do you deal with the lag?
02/13/2018 04:06:54 PM · #47
The sun here in CO is hard. ESPECIALLY on snow. But you did a good job here with what you were given. I've only looked at thumbnails so far, cause my connection is slower than dial up here at work sometimes.

For shooting outside here, shade is a must, and the way your camera adjusts for the reflection off the snow, is crazy. I carry a multi surface reflector that is a diffuser for shots like these. It means I can't do big things like your heart image, but it does mean you don't get a squints the entire time. I LOVE the hiding behind the hat image. That's fantastic.

Is the wedding here in CO?

Yes Robert, it’s in Durango. If I knew the area better I would’ve had a better shaded location chosen. But we just arrived there that day in Ouray so I had no time to really scout out a good location .

ETA: where are you?

That's a pretty good job. The most glaring problem is the one you already identified, the squinting. Without shade, he should have been wearing sunglasses. Unfortunately, looking away from the sun doesn't help a whole lot in the snow. Even standing in the shade if it is surrounded by well lit snow won't help much either. This would have worked better much later in the day, not that you can change that now. (My eyes are very light sensitive too, and I live in Canada so it's sunglasses on every moderately bright day in the winter, much worse than summer when a hat will eliminate much of the brightness)

I like your ideas, they look like fun shots. Obviously they liked them too.

What do you mean by the lag? There shouldn't be any lag when using the flash.
02/15/2018 10:48:55 AM · #50
I’m used to “burst” without the flash. And when I have the flash mounted it (flash) has to recharge so there is a lag....I have to wait for the flash to be ready again...

There must be a fast way to power it up?
