Long story, but my D810 packed in just 4 days before a central coast workshop.

My Wife, ever the knowledgeable one, looked at me and said, "It's a sign from God."
To which I asked, "well, what is?"
(Here's the money quote) "You know, that Nikon you've been talking about, you should just go get it."

I was at Samys the next day.

So, you might be asking, what is the key learning? Don't leave on a 3 day workshop unless you've had the new camera for like a month, at least.

It is, an amazing machine, and I have only scratched the surface. Files are HUGE, 55 Mb. XQD memory cards are ridiculously expensive, and on really short supply. Unless I am shooting action, like birds in flight, Surfers, etc I am thinking of making the SD card the primary and XQD backup; all my laptops and backup drives have SD, not XQD slots.

One strange thing. With all my other Nikons, in Live View, you push the command dial "up" to see the histogram as you adjust exposure. Even though the D850 manual says you can, the only way I can see a live histogram is in movie mode or silent (electronic) shutter mode. I now have to take a shot, then view the RGB histograms, or switch back and forth from movie mode. I hope it is rectified in a future firmware upgrade.

D850 images are on my portfolio, starting with the detail shot of hibernating butterflies.
