...anyone else here ever done this? The guy whom I used for my Bite entry has a monster truck, Anger Management, and he and his sons - known in the monster truck world as Team Como - are doing some monster truck shows stateside in February in WI and SD. If work and yoga school permit, he wants to pay me to go down and shoot. Already told him to make sure I get an all-access pass so I can get candids when they're not doing their thing.

So this is pretty much the last subject matter on earth I ever thought I'd be shooting, been watching youtube docs on the subject for ideas but clearly there are a lot of restrictions as to where a photog can be while the trucks are doing their thing.

Any help or advice greatly appreciated, so I'm not scrambling around trying to get a good angle!!

Here's an old thread with some examples ... if it's indoor it will probably be a lot like shooting a hockey game or auto race -- you'll need a fast shutter speed and some telephoto capability. I suspect that the best method will involve pre-focusing/framing on a spot where the action will be (e.g. ramp, obstructing victim vehicle, etc.) and waiting for the subject to enter the scene. Depending on the set-up you may also be able to get some panning shots.

If you can shoot with both eyes open you can monitor the subject with the "open" eye while maintaining framing in the viewfinder with the other.

it's just like shooting any other indoor action event: fast, exciting, fun, and terrible lighting.

you'll be panning most of the time and will want your shutter no less than 1/250 (when I'm shooting NASCAR and panning for car shots, i'm usually in TV mode).

bump your iso as high to your highest comfort level.

it's been years since i shot it, but at the time it kinda irked me in that the owner of the Monster Truck event, clear channel communications, actually executed a rights-grab on their credential, claiming copyright of all images captured and allowing a one-week license to the media entity requesting the credential. don't know if that's the case today, but you and your buddy probably should make sure you're clear for whatever they need you to do.

good luck, have fun!

Paul...thanks for the link, useful though all the pics are long gone :-/

Skip, thanks, good idea to keep that in mind. I don't think that's the owner of these Monster Truck shows, but will get ahold of the guy I'm supposed to be shooting for and see. Surely there's a diff between just a regular photog in the stands and one that's actually there as a team's official photog. And besides with celphones etc nowadays, how can they stop people?

I wonder if there's a specific spot (similar to like an NFL game) where all the photographers are forced to stay in? If this is the case, get there early and set up so that you get the front. I know when I shot an away football game for my school I was forced to stay in one area once and got there as the game started (because I was in the locker room getting some shots) and found that the only reason I managed was because I'm 6'3. I had to shoot over people which ultimately didn't give me great shots but enough to meet my quota for the school.

Can't wait to see some shots!

Oh, bring ear plugs... Them suckers are LOUD!!!

Yeah, luckily for me I'm also tall at 5'10 so I can shoot over a lot of short people. I was even thinking of packing my ear protection headgear, not just earplugs. Talked to my contact today and he suggested I go with them for some upcoming dates that are closer to home - and for which I don't need quite so much lead time as I would for the Feb shows. I plan to read up on the sites for the shows he's attending and seeing what the restrictions are for photogs. Thanx much! :-)

They can stop them, like this! Holy cow!

Oh, yeah, that hearing protection. Total forgot that and that should have been at the top of the list.
