I have been away for a while, so forgive me if this topic has been discussed at length in the last year. I am trying to participate and vote in as many Challenges as possible. So there is a two-fold reason for this discussion. First, how do people generally vote on images (i.e., what is the criteria upon which you make your vote). Second, how can I improve my photography based on the votes I receive on my entries.
So, I will start by saying, I vote based on two factors: (1) adherence to the challenge description / rules, and (2) appeal. The latter is a combination of creativity, artistry, mechanics (composition, focus, exposure, etc.), and the x-factor. The x-factor is whether I would want a copy to hang on the wall, or shout to the world, "hey look at this great image!".
Consequently, I believe, looking at the last 7-8 Challenges, I have voted lower than many on images that we agree are the best of the entries.
