I am interested to hear what others interpret this challenge to mean. I can think of a couple of possibilities, but I understand that in the end its what the voters think.
1) A picture that is so technically bad that its interesting. i.e.. out of focus, overexposed, underexposed, camera motion etc.
2) A picture that is technically good but the subject matter is uninteresting.
3) A picture that is technically good but the subject is grotesque to the point that it is upsetting to look at but you can't take your eyes off of it.
4) A picture that is so technically bad that you can't even make out what the subject is and wouldn't spend any unnecessary time looking at it. i.e. The Brown ribbon.

What do you think?

Sounds as messy and confusing as facial fails. :(

You must be very confident in your ability to take a bad picture! I know I am. I just don’t know how bad!

Facial Fails, So Bad it's Good, Subject Out of Frame... Who are we tying to impress?

It's the winter blahs. Celebrate them! It's fun to goof off, take ourselves less seriously, have a fling in the mud (so to speak).

From MY perspective (and this is an entirely personal point of view) that ^^^^^ image may be "bad", even grotesquely so, but it doesn't make it to "good" because I'm not interested in looking at it.

Speaking of Brown Ribbons in this challenge, it will be interesting to see if the "best" images (i.e. well composed, lovingly processed, interesting pictures of the sort that usually ribbon) make it to the bottom of the heap.

^^^ A much better challenge suggestion.

So then ordinarily for a DPC challenge you may look at a picture and think to yourself “that is a bad picture” (for whatever reason it may not appeal to you). You would then give the picture a 1, 2 ,3. In this challenge you would do the opposite and give it a 10, 9, or 8. It then seems to me that this challenge is strictly based on abstract emotion and not the technical (sharpness, composition, etc.) of the picture. If it is based on the technical properties than the more out of focus a picture is, the better score it will get. If this is the case then We will see a lot of very out of focus pictures!

Ah, so that's it. I'll have to wait a few months for the mud.

Since this is a Minimal Editing challenge it should be easier to take a "bad" picture ...

And what's up with all of the archive-friendly challenges lately?

I thought our niche in the world of photography challenge sites was the "has to be taken during the challenge period"??

I thought the idea of this site was to learn take good pictures not bad ones. I might as well re enter a picture I took 16 years ago when I first started on DPC!

A niche that has seen off a lot of people. We can do both...

I'm in... maybe. Entered in a moment of madness. It's so embarrassing I may still delete it.

Wait, is there another type of moment??

Also: If you remove your entry, it will be DQ'd. :P

I am also in. Just need to fix my title. Does anyone know how to spell "pollup" correctly?

I'm still in, but I've just changed my entry. I'm much happier now.

I am in, and I think I nailed the part about the photo being bad.
02/24/2018 10:59:06 AM · #21
This is a tricky one to vote on! I guess I get to make up my own definition of what meets the challenge LOL.
02/24/2018 11:21:08 AM · #22
I agree. I've voted, but I'm not sure I've got it right. Will probably go back for another look when I've got time.

I'm trying to comment on all of them, if only to clarify my thinking in my own head.

I will be out soon, turns out I also nailed the part about the photo being good as well. I made it too good by using standard editing not realizing this is a minimal editing challenge :(
