Why should it not?

I'm such a dinosaur I don't even know what that means. I mean, I know Instagram is a place where pictures get posted. But explain to me what it would do for us, in [ractical terms, and how to make it happen...

Think of it as Facebook but only photos are allowed to be posted.

In terms of benefits it would give us some free marketing. Get enough followers you can really gain some traction. And with that comes LOTS of clicks to the site.

As for how to make it happen... I’d say Langdon would have to rewrite some rules when you sign up saying that the photos are potentially going to be used on instagram. Once that’s completed, make a profile... And start posting... simple.

Post Challenge winners on DPC Instagram Page, along with curated images (Site council) occasionally during the week.

Not really sure if we would even need to do other images... I figure the page could do one per day (1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place) for every challenge. That is more than 7 images per week isn't it? Especially in the occurrence of a tie? Or the rare time we have an extra challenge that week?

I think Section 6.2 of the Registered User Agreement (AKA Terms of Use) already allows DPC to re-post pictures for "marketing" and promotional purposes ... Langdon would have to set up (or designate someone to set up) an account in DPC's name and authorize someone to actually do the posting (unless that can be automated/scripted).

I'm not sure if there is a way to automate posts on Instagram... This would be for someone to take control of.

Great Idea.Instagram is great, some really outstanding photogs on there.

Anything that generates visibility for DPC is a good thing. If if brings only a very small fraction of those folks over here, and if we can interest/retain just a fraction of those, it's a win.

Getting WAY ahead of myself on this as I don't see this happening any time soon/if at all but there could be a way possibly to give the photographer credit by tagging their Instagram handle to the photo... Could be a win win for both the photographer and DPC as a whole.

I love all the wonderful ideas for enticing new members but it all stops with discussion. I truly don't know the logistics for working off someone else's website other than linking to the site with the okay from the owner, so my input is probably moot, but it seems to me that an appointed member could manage a twitter page and add the photos of the winner of a challenge. They will need to add a link in their tweet to DCP. If this can happen, the member will need to agree to having their photo tweeted and of course watermarked.

My daughter is a personal trainer and has a web page on a site like Wordpress and has links to various pages that are pertinent to her training. She is also linked with FaceBook and has had very good results with this. She also gets a little money here and there from companies she is linked with. For someone with extra time on their hands it would not only help DPC but you have a chance of making a little pocket change.

This is where someone who is smarter than me comes in and says, "it's totally possible by just doing...[insert really smart thing here]"

As for the link, the link to the DPC home page can be put in the bio of the profile.

It would make more sense to have DPC set up an Instagram profile and for us to just tag in our submissions.

I'm so glad to see so much response to this! I have an Instagram account, and I try to find one picture that I like each day and post it. The other day I posted a picture from the shopping cart challenge a few years ago, and I tagged #dpchallenge to it--I noticed that there are only 806 #dpchallenge tags in all of Instagram, which I thought was odd, because I think a lot of members here post their DPC pics to Instagram as well. It seemed like good, free publicity, so I put this thought out there.

I follow 1x, 500px, and viewbug, and I get to see their pics of the day every day. It would be good exposure for DPC and the photographers, so if it can be done, I think it would be a huge benefit.

I think this is a good idea and would really help in promoting the site and recruiting new members. On a related note, what is everyone’s user name/handle?

Although Instagram does not attempt to claim ownership of images posted, the Instagram terms of use include the following potentially troubling language:

"You hereby grant to Instagram a non-exclusive, fully paid and royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable, worldwide license to use the Content that you post on or through the Service, subject to the Service’s Privacy Policy"

I'm not in favor of letting Instagram have the ability to sublicense DPC photos royalty-free, potentially for profit, at no cost to Instagram and with no compensation to DPC or the owner of the image. Especially in the case of award-winning images, I would want any transferring to Instagram to not be automatic but instead to depend on specific permission from the image owner/DPC member.

Looks like you are only supposed to post your OWN images on Instagram. Putting up images not owned by you and/or without legally binding permission may be a costly mistake. See the Instagram Terms of Service:

"You represent and warrant that: (i) you own the Content posted by you on or through the Instagram Services or otherwise have the right to grant the license set forth in this section, (ii) the posting and use of your Content on or through the Instagram Services does not violate the privacy rights, publicity rights, copyrights, contract rights, intellectual property rights or any other rights of any person, and (iii) the posting of your Content on the Site does not result in a breach of contract between you and a third party. You agree to pay for all royalties, fees, and any other monies owing any person by reason of Content you post on or through the Instagram Services."

Yes. This would be the way to go. Allows the choice to remain with the photographer.

The picture was mine. And it won. I only post my own photography on my page. After looking at my original post, it may have not been clear.

Not sure how to guide you to the Instagram link, but my handle is ecmguy on there :)
