Hey all, I'm not sure if this is new to you, but I just discovered the 'dehaze' filter in Photoshop, and it is ridiculously good if you're shooting in hazy conditions. I recently went to Jebel Jais in the UAE, and after a 3 hour drive, we found out we were in the middle of a dust storm. We still took a few photos but thought the trip was a bust overall. I brought my photos into work the next day and someone mentioned the 'dehaze' feature in Photoshop, so we found it. It's amazing. Here's the before-and-after photos:

Before:

After:

If you're editing in Adobe Camera RAW, go to the 'FX' option, or you can select it in Photoshop under Filter/Camera RAW Filter, and it will take you back to the RAW page. It's not for every situation, and adds some color noise, but it saved a lot of photos from a trip that I thought was wasted!

A dramatic improvement (and picture) indeed ... since not everyone (including myself) has access to this feature, I wanted to see how close I could come with "traditional" editing, using Photoshop 5.0 (circa 1995 version) -- hope you don't mind. :-)

Another way to "de-haze" a picture is using "high-radius Unsharp Mask" -- you set the USM filter to a low "amount" and a high "radius" with a zero threshold. For this image I set it to 16% / 64px radius / 0 threshold, and applied it three times after adjusting with two RGB Curves, one overall and one masked (a little sloppily) to affect only the background cliffs.

I can post screen captures of the Curves later if you want ...

I have several other "Before/After" examples of "rescued" pictures here, also processed mainly with various Curves adjustments ...

Not bad with 1995 Photoshop!

This is also included in Afinity Photo, I have been using it for 3 years, great filter.

Thanks ecmguy - that is really useful to know and I just give it a quick test and very pleased with the results.

Doesn't seem to be available in Photoshop CS5.

That's a filter I've been using extensively, mostly in the RAW processing stage in LR. Worth its weight in gold.

Depends on how much haze it's carrying; haze is heavy stuff :-)

Do you mean you are “ exporting” to PS and then importing back to LR ? There is no direct setting in LR I am missing ?

If you have LR Cc the dehaze functionality is available directly in the develop module. If you use older versions of LR (or Photoshop for that matter) it’s not available

CS5 can't do that either. Think it's time to upgrade!

You REALLY have to watch out for those mean 'toons! But, back on topic, the Camera Raw lens distortion tool looks awesome, yes. It's basically following the lead of DxO Optics Pro, which I've had for several years. I haven't even tried the PS one since I have gotten used to DxO. I'll have to check it out.
