Some observations on the Fool the Viewer challenge. This does not qualify as a rant, just an observation on the strangeness of scores, which I believe has been around since the beginning of the site.

A classic DPC blue ribbon, ignoring the challenge topic and Lydia claiming that the idea was copied. I believe her.

6 of the top 10 meet the challenge, imho.

7 of the next 10.

3 of the bottom 5 (not including mine, but I did try to make it look like a charcoal or a water color).

But the best thing about this challenge, IMHO, were the comments of streetpigeon. They really are fantastic. Here is a link you can use to browse through them. //www.dpchallenge.com/comment_browse.php?USER_ID=173844

Haven't looked at the rest yet, but I sure appreciated the one I got, though it seems like it was edited more than once and I had to check the "helpful" box repeatedly ... :-)

An artist's work is never done. Leonardo Da Vinci was the same way.

To be fair, Sisto (the blue ribbon winner) is not confident in his command of English at all, and he is often PMing me for help deciphering the meaning of challenge topics, although he did not in this case. That doesn't "excuse" the voters, though :-)

I have no difficult to admit that my image is not a my original idea, I saw it on the web, the original had only the lips and the eye; I modified it adding cigarette and smoke and giving the glam mood. in this case I was almost sure that my enter was wrong for this theme but I tried :)
Sometimes I enter photos that I like too much and their go bad; sometimes (as in this case) I enter images that obtain a good positions without a particular reason.
As Bear said, I often ask help (not only to Bear) to interpret some challenges because of my childish english (for example the next "color slides" or other in the past) so sorry for this.

I think it is very rare for someone to come up with a totally original idea. Most images of this kind are interpretations or variations of a theme. There is nothing wrong with that.

So surprised, humbled and charmed to be given a shout out by Don (posthumous). I'd like to thank all the little people that made this possible, but does anyone really want to hear about my byzantine mental realm?
Really, I'm very touched. Thank you.
I appreciate this community so much. The atmosphere is warm and talent abounds.
And I truly enjoy commenting. My favorite challenges, vis a vis making comments, are those that allow us to be silly and inventive -- what is this, title the photograph, what are the people saying, guess the song, fool the viewer, etc. I literally (i.e., figuratively) sink my teeth into these.
Of course most are not of that ilk, and they are fun to comment on as well.
I follow the threads about commenting with great interest. Perhaps there is merit, as some people have suggested, to linking voting participation and "permission" to enter one's photo into challenges. Or even linking commenting and entering. The downside possibility is that some people would resent such strictures enough to write off the entire venture. Actually, commenting is its own reward, an opportunity to hone one's own visual insight, refine one's own perspective by comparison and flex one's own ability to express oneself. As far as bringing in new participants, some forms of outreach might be considered. For example, we might individually put up paper flyers around our community (schools, stores, etc.) that someone devises and we individually get printed up. Also, there are many photography magazines (etc.)out there -- might one or more be convinced that a piece about DPC would interest their readers?
Back to commenting. My problem is that my tendency to write at length takes more time than I want to spend. And so I opt out of commenting as frequently as I'd like to. Also, ideally, I want to not only comment on my higher rated selections, as my fellow denizens of the abyssal deeps, circa 5, are even moreso heartened by people's attention and interest. I do know that it's easier and more pleasant to express appreciation of an image than offer a critique or lukewarm praise. So I'm most likely to attend to those challenges, that interest me, with sparser participation, as I can give sufficient time to run the table. My personal goal is to pare my comments to one sentence, unless especially motivated by my favorites.
Let me not omit saying that I read everyone's comments avidly. Some open my eyes to images I didn't fully appreciate as I evaluated them for voting. Or just to significant details. Some are so deft and astute that I feel like I'm sitting at the feet of the commenter and learning. Some are so poetic that my heart skips a beat. Some are so warm and embracing that I'm proud to belong among this cohort. Some are so funny that I crack up. Some are so wry or trenchant that I sit here nodding my head.
It's an honor to modestly confer with people who try, try, try.

I agree! streetpigeon's comments are a hoot! Thank you, Rich!

I've had this image in my Ideas Folder for a long while now. Thanks for believing me, Don!

Oh! I didn't say he "copied" it. And I wasn't meaning to accuse...

I was genuine when I said I wish I'd have "copied" it before Sisto did. Ha!

I have an Ideas Folder that I put fun things in to "copy" or "vary" when I draw a blank on ideas for challenges.

I recommend it highly. :D
