My daughter-in-law has inherited two Leicas, all documentation, certificates for camera bodies and lenses, meters, extra lenses, and so on. It isva truly remarkable collection. She is looking for someone trustworthy in the CA Bay Area to appraise them for her. If anyone can make a recommendation please do so and I will pass the info along. Thanks in advance.

How old are they and in what condition? If they are from the earlier days of Leica and in mint condition they could be extremely valuable. Unfortunately I don't know any appraisers in the bay Area. My sister lives there, but that doesn't help anyone, LOL.

They are quite old, all original documentation, quite valuable indeed.
I tried Stanford Library and some others but they don't seem to have photo curators.

If they're classics....

Go to Tamarkin Camera

They're a company I used to do work for and their main specialy is Leica products. They do auctions and what not. See if you can find the model on their site to get a comparison.

Hope that helps....

You could try getting in touch with a person who works in the photography colllections areas, be it curators, staff, etc. of either the Fine Arts Museum or the Museum of Modern Art in SF. Someone should at least be able and willing to direct you down the right path if they cannot personally offer any info.

And when bear_music says "extremely valuable" depending on the model, some mint condition units sell for a few thousand dollars apiece....

Here is a great page with Leica M units
//www.tamarkin.com/auction/index.html#9

Also, can you find out the "history" of the camera. For instance, the camera might be worth a $500-$5,000. But a camera that was once owned by so & so might fetch $10,000-$25,000.

So do you know where "they" got the camera?

And perhaps you'll be lucky enough to have something like this (in which case you might be on the way to a Canon 1Ds Mark II and all the primes, 70-200mm, 100-400mm, 400mm and 600mm) ;)

150. Leica A Elmax Nr. 821. Any Leica with a serial number below 1000 is of unique interest to the Leica collector, but one that is completely original with the proper 50mm Elmax f3,5 lens is a sensation. With early ever ready case, this Leica A Elmax would be the crown of a complete Leica collection. Condition: Ex $14,500 - $17,500

Thanks everyone! We will follow up these suggestions. I think she has something pretty extraordinary. Anne
