Rockin' changes! Thanks Langdon and SC!

I've wondered about something now for a couple years and finally remembered to ask.

An Automotive site I have been a member of for coming up on 10 years now, has a very strict policy on Group Discussion of Fees, Charges, etc.
To quote:
"Many countries -- including the United States of America, where _____ is based -- have strict legal guidelines regarding group discussion of charges for items or services. For this reason, absolutely no group discussion of fees, charges, prices, pricing policy or labor rates is allowed on _____. It does not matter what currency you use (dollars, clams, coconuts, bananas), this discussion is absolutely FORBIDDEN, for your safety as well as ours."

This is all about price fixing, and falls under the Sherman Act and can be prosecuted as a felony.
Fees and charges for services are often discussed here and am curious why it is allowed.

Great changes Langdon! The addition of the Buy/Sell forum alone is worth the price of membership IMO.

While you're tweaking forums, here's a suggestion: make the Public Random Photo thread a permanent feature that automatically drops posts more than a month or two old.

Thanks again for the upgrades.

YES!!!!! I think everyone would appreciate this. The threads would have a nice home and be ready to go for the folks that participate in those threads and giving them their own section would make them hideable for those of us that find them really anoying (my big complaint is that the titles are sometimes misleading so I click on them thinking it's discussion of the challenge topic).

Basic rundown:

You can sell photography related equipment but not other junk.
No commercial sales, no posting your microstock referral codes.
Format your thread titles using FS/FA/WTB.
No price policing.
Don't violate TOS.
Only bump your thread twice a day.

Sweet improvements. :)

I know it would be a bit of extra work so it's absolutely just a suggestion but would it be possible to move at least some of the main threads on stock photography (from the last few months) into the new Stock Photography forum so it's easy to find and refer to them?

Done :o)

Thanks! Figured it would be more likely to happen if I provided thread IDs so you didn't have to search, just move them on over! :o)

sweet about the buy/sell forum is it possible that we can have a feedback thread as a sticky so thats its always at the top of the buy/sell forum. Then we can all leave out feedback there in one place.

Shhhh! Sherman isn't a member. ;-P

I'm not familiar with the law in that regard, but I'm certainly seen "how much do you normally charge..." and "what's the going rate for..." in other forums.

Thank you. I didn't want to make suggestions without knowing what was already in place.

What follows are a few suggestions based on experience in another FS/FT forum that have worked well at preventing things from turning sour.

- The seller must have the item in their possession. I don't know why, but there always seems to be a few who want to put an item up for sale that they 'are going to get very soon'. This also includes things like posting an ebay auction, or a link to a FS/FT thread in another forum.

- Post must include a price. Without it the post is just checking for interest and can quickly degenerates into price policing.

- Any offers on the item must be made thru the PM system. This does several things, including allowing the thread poster the chance to potentially choose from several offers as well as insure there are valid email addresses on file should a deal go south.

- Any questions must be asked thru the forum thread. This prevents the poster from having to answer questions many times, as well as allows others to benefit from the Q/A.

- No low-balling. This is covered by the existing price policing policy I would imagine, but restricting discussion to helpful comments about the item as well limits the potential of 'that lens sucks, what you need is ...' This also applies to all parties involved -- although putting another down ("you don't want to sell to ...") is covered by the TOS.

- Create and post a detailed method of what the site's responsibilities are should a deal go bad. It can get ugly, and it is best for all concerned if everyone knows going in what to expect.

- Consider using a dedicated feedback site, such as Heatware. This provides an easy reference for all to see feedback on the buyer/seller across multiple FS/FT forums. Requiring feedback reference in post along with price and item description is a good idea.

---

Great improvements to the site, can't wait to see what's coming next.
