I saw this with friends at the theatre when it came out and it was entertaining the first time. Watched it again with my wife at home last week and it sure didn't hold up to the first time. She put it in good terms - "I am anxious and feeling on the edge, but yet I am still quite bored."

5/10

Too much Hollywood, not too much in common with the book (which was very good)

Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain - 11/10

I can't think of another movie that makes me laugh the way this one does and when it's over, I'm sad that it's over and I feel good inside.

"The Lives of Others" 8/10 and I do not rate highly! - German subtitled but very approachable and a quite devastating look at East Germany prior to Unification

28 weeks later - 3/10

An absolutely shockingly bad movie. Bad wooden acting, poor story, even worse direction and dire camera work. That's the good stuff.

This movie is full of holes and gaping canyons in the plot that are laughable. For example, the main female 'hero' is called Major by her army buddies and saluted as such. I have no problem with that until you think the girl is no mroe than 30 years old, isn't decorated, doesn't carry a sidearm and has absolutely no knowledge of the event until she was called in. If she was a major do you not think she would be running the op? And have the equipment (not to mention an entourage) to last in the field like a gun, radio unit, GPS, maps etc etc. But no... she has none of these things. Did i mention she's far too young to be a major and her hairstyle is against military regulations?

Also, in one part the US Army gas the city to kill the infected. Some soldiers come through wearing NBC suits and set fire to the survivors to be sure they're all dead. Our heroes survive this by getting in a car and closing the windows. Then the car won't start so the male lead (best actor in it) just pulls his shirt over his mouth and pushes the car to get it started (which wouldn't work). If it was that easy to survive, surely it's pointless doing it and pointless the soldiers wearing of NBC suits.

There's about 10 more things I can bring up examples of that shouldn't waste space here.

The camerwork is some of the worst I have seen in a long time. This type of movie does not suit 'arthouse' style camera cuts and freeheld action moments. Think Michael Bay's 'direction' in Transformers action scenes, but replace the robots with zombies and you pretty much have it. Shaky, indistinct, time-wasting nonsense. Coupled with the terrible shots they have in the intermittent scenes of trees blowing in the wind, signs swaying on chains, wide shots of London that serve no practical purpose and really pointless, drawn out scenes when the kids are on a scooter going fro one place to another and the 'pointless slow motion syndrome' kicks in. This is like a guide to shots you shouldn't do in a movie and feels like the production team knew they had an abysmal product so tried to give it a classy veneer by pulling out the most cliched arty shots they can think of that offer no enhancement to the final product but in fact make it obvious from a mile off to anyone with a brain that the directorial staff have no idea. Also, they gratuitously and pretentiously go for the "squeamish" shots- people being bitten, throwing up blood, thumbs in eyes, close ups of injections etc- that don't need to be in, bu again, since they have such a crap product, they try to give it an edge with a series of totally pointless and very very forced shots to try and make it more of a horror than a pantomime crap fest.

Oh, and the night scenes are filmed in daylight but with a filter over it to make everything look murky and dark... I am yet to find the words to explain the sheer dumbassness of this.

Trust me, this review is more entertaining than the movie and you didn't waste 90 minutes of your life reading it.

I give it a 3 because it's occasionally well acted (Robert Carlyle is good for the first 20 minutes) and one bit in the pizza parlour is nicely done. But the rest of the film is terrible, the mistakes glaring, the direction uninspired and primitive and the bit where the Major gets beaten to death with her own gun is soooo stupid it makes me cringe. Question, if you're beating someone to death with the butt of a rifle, which way would the scope be pointing? That's right, away from the person and along the barrel , hence towards the sky. Not in this film though. They either reverse-mounted the scope, or decided to beat someone to death with the barrel which would mean they would have to turn the gun around for the shots.

Oh, and the helicopter they escape in changes 3 times and all the fields are all nicely ploughed and trimmed... even though everyone's dead.

Shocking.

No Country for Old men - 3/10 - I did not like this at all - in fact I fell asleep during the last half hour. Hubby loved it though.

Walk Hard - 8/10 - way better than I expected!

Into the Wild - 9/10 Loved it. Made me want to go live in an old bus in Alaska. And not eat local vegetation.

There Will be Blood - 7.5/10. Not quite what I expected. Seemed a little dragged out in spots.

Cloverfield - 4/5
Really liked this on DVD, I wish I'd seen it on the big screen. Can't give it a full 5/5 because of some annoyances and just too many unbelievable (within the context of the monster premise) moments. Still, much better than the torture porn that passes as horror these days. And fun to see so many familiar locations. For once in a relatively low-budget movie, New York looks like New York and not like Vancouver.

Michael Haneke's "71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance", third in a kind of trilogy about the disastrously numbing effects of television. The first two are "The Seventh Continent" and "Benny's Video". They're all very creepy, excellent movies. I highly recommend.

The Bourne Ultimatum- 8/10

The story wraps up quite nicely. Camerawork, acting and lighting are perfect as always.

More of the same but that's no bad thing.

Atonement. 8/10. Good movie, good story. Interesting sound track. I like how everything tied back to the steady rhythm of a typewriter. My wife wanted to rent it, and I ended up liking it more than she did.

No Country for Old Men. 6/10. I found it to be a very introspective and philsophical movie. The sleeve it came in said 2 hrs 22 min. So as my dvd screen read 1:50 I thought there would be plenty of time to wrap up the movie, then it ended well short of 2:22. I to don't know what all the award hype was about. It was ok, not horrible, just ok.

Juno. 8/10. Pretty good movie. Some funny one-liners: "Next time I see that Bleeker kid, I'm gonna punch him in the weiner." I saw it in the theater, then bought it on DVD and watched it again this weekend. I liked the soundtrack. I felt a little uneasy during some scenes (Bateman's prom memory scene), but I guess that was intended.

Forgetting Sara Marshal. 9/10. Funny movie in line with Superbad and Knocked Up. Some great one-liners, physical comedy, and characters.

I have got Into the Wild at home along with 1941.

I expected way better than what I got. The acting and the scenary were the only reasons I gave this a three, otherwise a 1. I wish I could get those 148 minutes back.

That's interesting because my wife thought the same but I loved it....best movie of have seen this year, anything Sean Penn is involved in has to be good.

"Run, Fatboy, Run" 10/10

BRILLIANT. Pay no attention to any bad reviews. I nearly did and would have missed this absolute gem. Directed by David Schwimmer, written by Michael Ian Black and Simon Pegg (my comedy god). It is sweet, funny, silly, tender-hearted, a wee bit gross, and just hilarious. I seriously laughed nearly the whole way through. I do love my English comedians though.

Just saw The Forbidden Kingdom with my wife last week. We loved it and I would give it a 10 except for a few isolated slow/awkward moments that notch it down to an 8 or 9/10 in my mind. It has great physics defying action/fight scenes of course, Jet Li has a fun role that is not typical Jet Li, Jackie Chan is enjoyable and demonstrates great talent as usual, the overall feel of the story is very enchanting and it has a couple of brilliant twists that totally caught me by surprise.
