Not my usual thing... it's a New Zealand movie explaining a lot of the Maori history and belief system, but the overall plot is to do with a family and it's actually damned good!

Superb acting from a largely unknown cast. The leading girl is simply brilliant and puts all the Dakota Fannings in the world to shame. Acting at its finest.

just saw this movie as well and have to agree with you 100%, the girl is just plain awesome and she did'nt even have to do with acting before whatsoever!
i like how they tried to combine reality and the super-natural to make for an interesting plot. 9/10

the other one i just saw was "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (1998) with johnny depp and benicio del toro.
the beginning made me LOL but after a while too much clowning and not so very funny. you learn a lot about drugs and their effects though...;)
rating 5/10

Hum.. But it's 79% fresh! Should we bother?

I guess they're being rather polite... or just not as cynical as me i suppose :) Every time I think of the movie, i think of something else that makes absolutely no sense. It's almost like they wrote the first half and figured it was about 65% ridiculous, then figured nobody would mind if they made the second half 95% ridiculous. I can only image the pitches the writers must have made:

"so... how about this lost Incan city is actually built on a UFO! AND, it begins to function again when all the skeletons are complete again!"

"right... so why doesn't it fly off when the skeletons were first created and situated there?"

"hmmm... nobody will think of that"

Oh, Mephisto. Glad you liked the movie :) An unexpected gem.

Juno... 8/10

Excellent cast; Ellen Page was just amazing and Diablo Cody's script was terrific as well.

Some of my favorite lines:

"That little pink plus sign is so unholy."
"That ain't no etch-a-sketch...this is one doodle that can't be undid, homeskillet!"
"I'm already pregnant...so what other kind of shenanigans can I get into?"

Prince Caspian

6/10

The visual effects are quite good.

The acting on the parts of "Peter" and "Susan" is stilted and unbelievable at times.

The script assumes that you have recently read the books, and that you can easily accept the adaptations made by the screen writers.

Ok film, but not as good as the first.

8/10 Robert Downy is so cute/cool

Atonement

8/10 just for the amazingly shot Dunkirk scene, loved the book

The Woodsman (2004) Nicole Kassell - Pretty good 8/10

I saw this on release night and yes, it prety OTT, but then I realised that almost 20 years have passed since I was a 15 year old boy watching "The last crusade" in the cinema.. Think back to how over the top and insane those films were.. Its age I'm afraid :(

Saying that, I thought it was a cracking film and great to see Indy back!! Even Mutt (Shia LeBouef) want as bad as I had been led to believe, he ws actually pretty solid and didnt overplay the arrogant young man too much, he also had a touch of humility.. Theres talk of him taking over the mantle as the main protagonist.. sure, why not! Maybe one more Indy film with Harrison Ford/Shia then let Indy take a backseat, as long as they dont sell it as the New Indy jones and try to develop Shia's character a bit more then I am all for it..

8/10

A few things bothered me. The stupid smile mary had on her face about 80% of the time. The lack of enthusiasm on indies behalf

Days of Glory (2006) 8.5/10

North African's (Algerian's) join the French Army in WW2 - this film is about the treatment they received from their French 'masters'. Similar (imo) to the film Glory.

Well worth a watch

Hmm...I saw three movies this past weekend...Marie Antoinette, 6/10...Eastern Promises, 7/10...but by far the best was Juno, easy 9/10. Ellen Page really deserved that Best Actress Oscar.

Indiana Jones 8/10. Fun rollercoaster ride with a few very forgiveable plot holes.

No Country for Old Men - easy 10/10, most of it thanks to Javier Bardem's role as Anton Chigurh, an absolutely chilling, virtually unstoppable killing machine. Too easy a role for most actors to overact and ruin, but he did a wonderful job of conveying such menace, so quietly, so effectively. (Read somewhere that when the Coens approached him, he said that he didn't speak good English and that he hated violence...and that, apparently, was why they wanted him so badly!) Tommy Lee Jones was good too, he was great in that role. But the guy who played Llewellyn didn't really strike me as all that memorable, though the girl who played his wife did.

Son of Rambow

10/10

Funny, different and a bit of a tearjerker for the baby in me. And considering jonfrommk had just seen it and was willing to watch again, I think my point is clear. It's a must!

Speed Racer 8/10

I thought it would really, really be cheesy. I was pleasantly surprised! I took my 9 year old neice, who giggled out loud at times, but the movie held my attention. It was pretty good!

Thank you for smoking 8/10

quite revealing and in a good way sarcasticly funny.
i loved the dialogues of the "m.o.d.-squad" :D

Dance! 9/10

awesome symbiosis of different music styles, dancing styles and differently raised kids. antonia banderas in the role of the dancing teacher is very convincing and quite self-ironic on getting the "outlaws" into ballroom dancing.
for me as a former tournament experienced ballroom dancer this movie was a real inspiration to start with it again.
loved it!!!

The Amateurs..(DVD)...8/10. "R"

Fun story line, good acting and it was hilarious. Nice twist at the end. (Beware: almost nude men, lol)

indiana jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull --

good special effects, but the acting/scripting seemed a little off to me. it didn't flow that well and the few humourous spots were wasted as a result.

it seems to be a trend with movies these days that effects come first, plot/acting come second. i was disappointed, especially since the original indy movies were so entertaining.

5/10

I too would agree with this rating on Speed Racer. I took my kids and they loved. My husband was not so thrilled but he has never seen the cartoon.

Memoirs of a Geisha 3/10

The book was an interesting description of the history of geisha and what the war did to an ancient traditional wa of life. The move could have been beautiful but it wasn't, it was reduced to a sappy back story love story with the characters watered down - I don't recommend it to anyone. It's not even a good chick flick.

Ditto from me as well. I also saw Transformers (9/10) and P.S. I Love You (8/10) this past weekend and was entertained by both. I cried all the way through P.S. I Love You...so have tissues handy. Transformers was really incredible...the special effects were worth the rental alone.

That's weird - I was on the edge of my seat watching P.S.I.L.Y. and I cried like a baby throughout Transformers.

P.S. I loved Transformers.

Indiana Jones (8/10) but some of the surprises I saw coming long before the actors. Also, suspension of disbelief such as gunpowder flying through a huge warehouse attracted to a magnetic source, lead bullets and gold coins also being magnetic.

Sex and the City (my wife dragged me there kicking and screaming as payback for Indiana Jones a couple days earlier). I was one of 3 guys in the theater until 2 minutes before the show when a few more came in. Then again there were only about 30 or 40 women opening day matinee in our local 16-plex. (3/10 from a man's POV, 10/10 from a woman's POV). Really weird part in the middle where the camera tilted up from both camera angles for a few minutes showing microphones and other props above and cutting off Carrie and Big's chins, then just shifting down where they should have been. The whole audience was thinking WTF? A $60M movie and they didn't notice or couldn't fix that? I figured it was a final copy production issue and they'd send out all new reels by Monday. Anyone else see that problem that would admit going to it?
