| I've heard several reviews of The Martian from scientist-types (and the author) and they seemed to agree that the only real scientific error is that the windstorm which precipitated the event is not possible given the low density of the Martian atmosphere. |

I am loving the book The Martian.
The action in the books feels like it moves faster than any other book I have ever read - crazy high stress though. |

Interesting.... if it really is reasonably accurate or possible, that would make it even better in my eyes. Good movie, in any case.

I'll probably read the book at some point, too, since most of the time, the book is better than the movie. Plus it would give me more time to "digest" some of the info.

Inside Out - 10/10
What a fabulous movie! Funny, sad, tragic, tender, thought-provoking, surprising, entertaining....... the list goes on. Much more than I had hoped for.
I watched it at home in 3D which helped..... I love 3D movies.
Edited to add:
Don't stop the movie as soon as the credits start rolling - there is some funny stuff right at the very end..... I love the bit with the cat!

El secreto de sus ojos / The Secret in Their Eyes (2009)
Loved it. Don't bother watching the 2015 hollywood copy, this is the real deal. 10/10
Also, one of the best soundtracks, right next to Wojchech Kilar's music.

| The Revenant: 8/10. I thought it was quite well-acted, and the scenery was breathtaking. It does, however, take top prize for "most significant departure of file from book." I thought the book was exceptional, and I really had to regard the movie as almost a different story altogether. |

We just saw The Departed for the first time, blown away... Bad pun... it's a tad on the gory side in places, but the pace is relentless and I was on the edge of my seat.

Finally watched Citizen Kane...though kinda creepy in that not one character blinks at all, it's beautifully lit and shot and the Trump err, Kane character is eerily reminiscent of a certain megalomaniacal Presidential candidate....so very timely. 9/10 |

Hunt For The Wilderpeople 10/10
A delightful, gorgeous movie from New Zealand. A couple of sad scenes, but ever so much humour and warmth as well. On top of that lots of pretty scenery and funny "Kiwi" talk.
I recommend it very highly.
I believe it will be released in the USA on June 24. |

Rudderless (2014), directed by William H. Macy. Starring Billy Crudup & Anton Yelchin.
Anton Yelchin died today at age 27 in a single-car accident (his own car).
I have enjoyed this movie mostly for the music & the energy. Also, I like simple movies with a good story, which this is. It's on cable (Starz) this month. I liked it enough to buy the DVD.
I rate it 10/10.

Hey do documentaries count? If so, Oh you Pretty Things, a trilogy of shorts on British music and fashion, is a fun and informative watch.
ETA: 10/10 from me on Deadpool...frickin funny, my date and I were howling our heads off in the back row esp during the sex scene ;-)

Robinson Crusoe - The Wild Life
3/10 don't bother.
I normally like animated movies, because these days, they usually have something to offer to most people and any age.
In this case, my three points are purely for the beautiful computer and animation work.
The storyline and dialogue were contrived and painfully tedious - two hours I won't get back.
I don't even think the little kids in the cinema were all that impressed with it, either.
Give it a miss.

Rotten tomatoes review
In general this is a very good movie, but do not be fooled, it is more thriller and suspense with twists rather than "sci-fi" action adventure.
Slight spoiler alert, but trigger warning- there is a very heavy and sad theme in this movie about a child with cancer. Perhaps it was the mood I was in, but this was a seriously bumming theme of sacrifice that almost distracted from any positive message.
Batman Vs. Superman- I am not the greatest fan of comic book inspired movies, but some are done better than others. I have pre-teen/teen kids, and so I have seen a ton.
This is how I rate the series of movies per my taste.
Deadpool 7/10.
X-men 6/10
Avengers/CAp America 6/10
Suicide Squad 7/10
Batman Begins 8/10

but after hearing the bad reviews of this movie, I didn't expect much. I was pleasantly surprised. Ben Affleck was great, so was Alex Luthor- and Amy Adams was underused but solid. the guy who plays Superman is a stiff, but alas, his character is dead so we will forgive him.
yep- spoiler alert, Superman is dead. Batman is a bit paranoid, and Superman wasn't evil, just a bit dumb and naive- and Ironically, love made him dangerous. The editing was dark and choppy and kept every scene to an attention deficit inspired short length. For any fans of Batman and Superman, there were plenty of great "one liners" such as "You are not brave- men are brave" and
"I am a friend of your son's" and Lex Luthor's final comments.
Oh, and a great flirty batman-wonder woman thing.
I hate to say it but I am looking forward to the next one.

I'm watching Batman v Superman on cable right now. 'General Zod' would be a great name for a pit bull dog, doncha think?
On another note, recently I watched Zero Days on cable. I give it a 10/10.
Roger Ebert said, in part "With “Taxi to the Dark Side,” “Going Clear” and scads of other impressive titles to his credit, Alex Gibney has established himself as an incredibly prolific and gifted documentary-maker who is also extraordinarily courageous: he goes where other filmmakers dare not go. But his latest, “Zero Days,” almost belongs in a category by itself. Easily the most important film anyone has released this year, it is a documentary that deserves to be seen by every sentient citizen of this country—and indeed the world."
It reminds me of the movie Blackhat, the best hacker movie ever, which I also give a 10/10.
I've been a movie buff all my life. We've come a long, long way from Busby Berkeley & Cecil B. Demille & the Golden Days of Hollywood.

| The Revenant, which as I had already read the true story behind Hugh Glass, was kinda dull. All that grunting from Leonardo di Caprio crawling around was quite tedious after awhile. 6/10 |

The problem i have with the DC characters is either no back story or too much. Superman and Batman have been rebooted ad nauseum, and Batman gets another flashback in BvS. we KNOW who he is, we don't need to see it again. Marvel did it right, they set up single movies before the group film. There is too much ground to cover in two hours when you have to introduce/establish characters too.
Superman needed another movie to introduce Lex Luther and woman needed her movie first, THEN you have dawn of justice with a proper Doomsday plot line. you have a few more character movies and then Justice league. There is just too much going on in this movie.

| Mike you certainly have a point. It needed somewhere between where it is now and the Captain America/avengers series, where every janitor in every building that gets blown up gets a back story movie... |

Haven't had much time for movies lately, but managed to see a couple...
Star Wars: Rogue One - 9/10
I rarely (nearly never) splurge on imax 3D and it has been a number of years since I have, but this one was worth it. Decent story, a few plot holes, but nothing that irked me. I'm not a Star Wars superfan or anything, so I just enjoy the films for what they are. I picked the wrong decade to quit doing drugs because this one would've been mind-blowing with a little sensory enhancement. Overall very enjoyable and dovetails flawlessly with New Hope.
Jason Bourne - 8/10
Delivered everything expected of it. These are the kind of movies I don't look for or care about plot holes in.
I brainstormed and came up with some ideas for future sequels:
Bourne in the USA - Jason finds out his real father is Bruce Springsteen, who sold the child to the CIA when he needed money to promote his band. Jason hunts him down and must get past the Boss' elite security to confront him.
Bourne with a Silver Spoon in his Mouth - Jason rediscovers his early childhood when he was placed in a CIA "orphanage" where the children lived lavish lives of excess in between their training to become clandestine assassins.
Bourne Yesterday - With nowhere left to go, Jason is taken in by kind-hearted old man who tricks Bourne into thinking he is the rightful owner of the Brooklyn Bridge and Jason must keep everyone from crossing it.
Still Bourne - Not what you were thinking, just a low budget compilation of re-cut scenes and regurgitated plot released straight to DVD. |
