The Babadook (10/10) - there wasn't much of a chance to see this in theaters, but it's on Netflix.

There are two schools of thought about Horror movies. Some people like the adrenaline rush of being scared. Others feel that monsters are real, in a psychological sense. In other words, the horror is within us. For the second group, this is a great movie, and provides the most insightful and complete study of the "monster" and how we deal with the "monster" that I've ever seen in a horror movie.

When it comes to movies, I don't give a lot of 10s.

Terminator: Genisys - 2/10

This came highly recommended to me by a number of people that told me that it "went back to the spirit of the first two!"

Well, except for Schwarzenegger being in it, I didn't feel that. It was very poorly done, the plot was convoluted as hell and it fell into the trap that too many movies seem to be falling into these days. Too much in too little time. I couldn't even finish watching it. I just didn't care enough.

The Hitman's Bodyguard - 7/10

Trailers looked like an OK action comedy, but it turned out to be much more entertaining than I thought it would be.

Going in Style - 7/10

Slightly formulaic and predictable, but entertaining, even for Riley (11).

The Tag Along (2015) (horror)
It was a blockbuster in Asia but never managed to see it.

Dunkirk - 9/10

A war movie unlike any I recall. Before I saw it, a friend said, "if you aren't a pacifist before you see it, you will be after."

The film is set during the Dunkirk evacuation between May 26 and June 4, 1940. Winston Churchill called the evacuation both a "colossal military disaster", and a "miracle of deliverance". The movie is intense from start to finish and brilliantly portrays both disaster and deliverance, weaving action and (limited) character development.

The film integrates musical themes from the Enigma Variations by British composer Edward Elgar (specifically Variation #9 - Adagio "Nimrod") into the dramatic and evocative film score (composed by Hans Zimmer) is exceptional and a highlight of the film for me. The director (Christopher Nolan) is quoted as saying "Elgar's monumental theme, a theme as beloved to the English as Dunkirk itself, is often played at ceremonial occasions and funerals. It's a theme which (I never admitted to Hans) I am incapable of hearing without feeling the surprising weight of my father's coffin on my shoulder." A majority of the soundtrack is traditionally environmental and serves very well to heighten the emotional impact of particular scenes. This film is worth seeing (or re-seeing) simply for the experience of noting the well-integrated score.

Dog's Purpose 9/10

If you are a dog person, you will need two boxes of kleenex. I'm a dog person, but I can handle it. I used no *sniff* kleenex throughout this movie. I deducted a point because it was really blurry in many parts of the movie. Maybe that was my allergies, though.

Blade Runner 2049.

9/10 would be 10 out of 10 IF the director had not hammered the dystopian state of the future in just about every single scene.

Best line, from Deckard: "Her eyes were Green."

Yes to the green eyes. I saw it but quickly forgot it. It piggybacked too much on the first one.

12 Angry Men -- 9/10

Groundbreaking movie shot almost entirely in one room with an all-star cast, dealing with issues which are unfortunately about as relevant today as when it was made in 1957.

Wind River, 10

Best movie I've seen in 2017. Thriller, mystery, my kind of wilderness adventure. Photographed not far from where I live. As a matter of fact, I traveled to the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming in August because the path of solar eclipse totality crossed that area. Jeremy Renner's best movie. You won't fall asleep during this one.

The Big Sick, 9

OK, I'll admit it. While I enjoy my fair share of explosions and severed limbs, I am a sucker for a well written RomCom. Don't judge me. This was written by the male lead and based on his relationship with the woman he eventually married. If you have ever had a close friend that has struggled with a cross culture relationship, you should check this one out.

War for the Planet of the Apes 8/10

I've been a huge fan of the PotA movie and TV show franchise since I was a kid, so I've enjoyed them all. Some of the recent reboots haven't been that great, but this one was excellent.

The Dark Tower 6/10

McConaughey plays a bad guy fairly well in this movie. The other actors also did a decent job. Good visual effects and action scenes. I haven't read the books, so I'm not being critical of that aspect of the movie, but as it relates to the plot I found the whole story hard to grasp and lacking some background. Overall entertaining, though.

Mudbound. Unrated.

Takes place during WWII era in Mississippi Delta. Deals with bigotry and morality. Violence aside, one of the best movies I’ve seen in awhile.

Bright 5/10

The action and violence were fairly constant and intense, but the story line is bizarre, a bit all over the place and the backstory never explained - I guess they leave it to the viewer to figure it out. Many of the scenes were painfully contrived and rife with what I consider unrealistic stereotypical dialog, characters and situations.

6/10

I agree about the "weaving action," that did make the movie more interesting, including Christopher Nolan's trademark liberties with time travel.

I completely disagree about the pacifist comment. This is a pro-war movie. If you want to see an anti-war movie, watch Full Metal Jacket (10/10).

The score may have been good, but the soundtrack really bothered me. Whenever there was a suspenseful moment, it used this very obvious and annoying pounding noise, so of course it felt "intense" because you want the noise to stop. This is a shortcut around good filmmaking.

I found it to be a cliched war movie whose only saving grace was Nolan's strange intercutting of four plot lines. I was also annoyed because he didn't convey the full importance of the Dunkirk evacuation. Reading Churchill's speech out of a newspaper at the end of the movie doesn't cut it.

This is one of those movies that is okay but annoys me as much as a bad movie because it could have been great.

The House - 2/10
I like stupid, over-the-top humor as much as anyone, but I prefer more cerebral comedy and this movie failed at one and had none of the other. It's like a bad SNL skit that just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. I rarely feel like I've wasted time watching even a bad movie, but this was ninety minutes I really wish I could have back. I'm generously giving it a 2 because I just assume I chuckled at one time or another during this mess.

The Darkest Hour. 9/10

Outstanding acting. Historically interesting. See Dunkirk also. They compliment each other.

The Imitation Game - 10/10

I would try to explain why, but it makes me cry to think about it. It will either resonate with you or it won't.

Moonlight - 9/10

This is one of those movies where the soundtrack - the score, the songs - becomes an integral character to the telling of the tale. Not a action flick.
