(Quit Smoking – Weight Loss) 6 Months Self Side Challenge. Can you conquer your demons?

This time you are not competing with dpciers, you are competing with yourself. But you have lots of friend in here cheering for you from all over the world.

Quite Smoking – Weight loss side challenge, Duration 6 months, we start at the first of June, till the 31st of December.
Put a target to yourself, about me, I want to lose 20 Kilos, this will be my target, I might not achieve it all, I might lose 15 .. I might lose 5, but any loss in here is a gain : )
You are the judge, you set the target to yourself.

Instead of having Advance Editing, this challenge will going to be expert editing, in order for your to join, you have to Expert Edit yourself and become a non smoker, to qualify to join our weight loss challenge, if you do smoke .. well too bad for you, you’ll have to quite .. yep, you have 10 days till the end of the month to quite, subscribe to the gym, buy your grocery, get your running shoes from the unexplored part of the basement. 10 days to get ready, to quit smoking, if you already did, then continue quitting smoking, and lose weight.

Btw, The most important thing is to take your Before pictures : ) don’t worry you don’t have to submit it .. now :P but I find it one of the most important thing in any weight loss program : )

We reached 5 plus participant, so we are going life 1st of June.

Prizes are: Blue Ribbon: for achieving 100% of your objectives, Red for 80-90%, yellow for 70-80, I’ll design the new ribbons, or if anyone would like to volunteer I don’t mind at all, actually I would love to have as much people involved as possible. The best thing is .. everyone who achieves their targets .. gets ribbons, not only the first 3. The reward will be better health, longer life,

This thread is a result to ‘’ I am going to Quit Smoking - PERMANENTLY ‘’ you might find a motivation there if you intend to quit smoking and join this side challenge.

So Far, the challenge champions are:
jotaga AmeedEl-Ghoul jettyimages Mark-A BAMartin cynthiann Quigley VitaminB cosprenks Intelli Mal37 cryan haze printer4u

Participants please provide these information:
Height, Weight, Target Weight, Days without smoke, BMI if you know it,

Also we are still preparing to start at the first of June, we'll try to refine the idea and perfect it before we start, so after the date we'd concentrate on our tasks.

Please share your ideas, if you have a specific weight loss program that you'd like to share, please feel free.

Thank you,

I'm in and since I only smoke when I'm on fire (thankfully that's never happened) put me down for weight loss :) My friends are dropping like flies from heart attacks and I don't want to

be next. I lost another friend while I was away visiting Susan snaffles in Ottawa over this past weekend and he was only a few years older than me. That makes FIVE in the

last 2 months. I'm sure as hell not going to be next. This is just the kick in the pants that I need and to have the support of fellow DPCers is awesome. I carry all my extra weight in

the area that's right for heart attack, right on my stomach. I just weighed myself this morning and was quite disgusted and then I was surfing the site and found this post so I think it's

meant to be for me.

Lets kick some ass and shed some weight and for those of you who are doing both, quiting smoking and loosing weight, I'm behind you 100%. Your challenge is way harder but together we can

do this. Yeah us, go us. We can do it, yes we can. With the help and support of each other we can do anything :)

All the best to you and yours, now lets get out there and do this.

MAX!

My BMI is 28,00, according to your numbers and your metric system. According to my numbers and metric system, my BMI is 27.4, wich I prefer, because I´m going to loose kilos, not pounds... :P

Oh Man, finally few minutes to breath and follow up, glad I had to finish all the work by the weekend, I'd hate to work Saturdays.
Any way .. I am really excited, really can't wait to start. Just the thought of it made me lose 2 pounds :) I am working on getting them back so by the time we start I have to be 220 :)

First of all welcome Brad and Max, we are happy to have you with us,
Quigley Man I am really sorry about your friends, 5 in 2 months .. thats allottttttt, But I am glad you are taking it positively and decided to change. You are still veryyyyyyyyyyyy Youngggg.
Don't feel exposed, I'll let you on a little secret, I have bunch of shirts that I'd die to ware, 2 are undershirts and the rest are a nice collection of body's, I have them for 3 years now, I got them out, the best of them is hanged on the closet, so I'd see it always, and my target is to ware it '' and look good in it ''. The undershirt I kind of ware these days, and open the shirt above, and what a sexy belly I have :) I see the looks, hear some comments, and storing all this negative feelings to fuel the plan :) We are very close to start losing weight, and you have a hellva advantage .. you don't smoke .. you will be in a better shape when we start the cardio ..
Welcome aboard.

VitaminB the BMI idea is wonderful, totally slipped my mind, I am including it, thanks and any other ideas are more than welcome.

jotaga According to the numbers I see, man you are an athlete compared to me :) you are in much better shape and easier to achieve your target, but I am not letting the blue that easy :) Btw, I changed to meagres from Kilo/CM to Pound/Inch to match the north American standard as the majority are from it, I calculate the same as you do, and find it really hard to adapt to Pounds and Inches :)

BAMartin The idea of money saved is amazing, but not sure how to standardize it, we will have currencies from all over the world, States, Canada, and Brazil, we might have more :)

P.S, Just for the sake of calculations, I've estimated the average smoker smokes 20 cigarette per day. and Will be updating accordingly. Please all update the missing info, and send me the Exact amount of days you quit smoking and how much it will be by the 1st of June,

for example .. today is my 11th day, by the 1st of June I will be 21 days without smoke '' wawww ''.
So kindly send the amount of days by.

Thank you all it is really amazing to work togather, I am looking forward.
As soon as we are done from the updates, we will do some brain storming on the best training methods and share our ideas.

Heyas,
I'd like to join to quit smoking starting June 1st, 2009.

Nic
Age: 29
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 175 lbs
BMI: 21

How long have I smoked? 12 years. eeep.
How much do I smoke? I smoke a pack plus some, per day. eeep.

looking forward to an extra $160.00+ a month.
looking foward to not smelling musty/smokey all the time
looking foward to increased senses (smell, taste, sight?)
looking foward to getting back the time I lose during the day to stop and smoke.
looking foward to more stamina to work harder and concentrate more.

Why do I pay money for all these bad things I am doing to myself???

I've had previous attempts to quit, but wasn't serious enough about it and never really quit for a given time.
05/28/2009 10:49:48 PM · #22
Damn, I just opened this thread for the first time, but didn't realize one had to quit smoking. Wasn't there another more general diet thread? I smoke cigars and don't feel like giving them up!

FYI, starting yesterday I went back on the online Weightwatchers for men (same handle = citymars). I lost almost 50 pounds using that website five years ago. Now I want/need to lose 15-20 lbs (7-9 kgs). I've needed to do this for a long while but frankly have lacked the motivation until yesterday I just sort of snapped into it.

Anyway, good luck with your endeavors and I'm sure you all wish me good luck with mine, too!

05/28/2009 11:48:15 PM · #23
This is great, everyone is sounding really excited and motivated. I'm still terrified, but really determined to make it work. I went out and bought some 16 hour patches yesterday, going out for my last pub night with the girls (as a smoker) tonight, and then determined to get healthy and stay that way. I have no weight to lose, actually I have no idea what my weight is and don't have scales, but I certainly don't want to put on weight, or lose it. I can't afford any new clothes, lol - but I'm happy where I am. If I can get to some scales I'll find out how much I weigh and log it in, but for now, here's my stats:
Age 44
Height 5'9"
Smoked from ages 18-23, gave up for 8 years, smoked again for 2 years, gave it up again for 8 years (boring isn't it) and have now been smoking for....guess what......2 years. This has to be the last time I have to go through this!
Smoking 20 a day, sometimes worse :-(

Looking forward to not being trapped by this evil and nasty addiction, to being free, to being there for a long natural life as a good mother to my 3 gorgeous children, to starting a fitness program and walking my lovely new puppy everywhere without getting puffed out, lol, to being able to not only look at a steep hill, but knowing I can climb it again, to regaining the blue in my eyes, the elasticity in my skin, the softness in my hair (oh yeah, and did I tell you I'll look 25 by December? lol), to never having to hide the smell again (!!!!!!), to never feeling guilty for the secrecy and degredation of smoking, and to getting rid of the last part of my ex, who brought me back to smoking. I will be free in more ways than one! Oh yes, and the time and money!

This is absolutely it for me. This is a great opportunity to do it with friends, with support and whilst helping others, and without excuse. It has to happen, now or never.

05/29/2009 12:11:40 AM · #24
I've been on the fence for the past week, but I've gotta jump in on this.

5'10"
275#
200-220 to start
-2 (June 1st to quit)
39.5

...ugh

I'm kinda going through a whole life change lately. This has to be done, thanks so much for the push. I've been smoking a record (for me) 2+ packs a day lately, and it's kicking my ass. I'm nervous as hell about quitting smoking, but I feel ready to deal with the weight. My plan includes lots of sleep for the first few days, along with exercise and the patch. Thankfully(?), I don't have a job until July, so I can focus on getting myself straightened out. Maybe I'll travel a bit. Any ideas for Northeast U.S. road trips? BTW, in order to avoid confusion, I just recenty requested a username change, so don't get caught off guard...

Thats it!! Forget the smokes, take a deep breath and set you free!!
Congrats!
Good luck!
I´m still free of cigarretes... I stopped counting the days... but its about 50... using patches and preparing my mind to the start of the weight challenge...
