Some people have asked what happened with my disqualified photos, so here's the low-down:

I've been mostly away from DPC for the last couple of years after buying a house and spending most of my time working on it. I just bought a Canon 5d MkII and new lenses, so I thought I'd start entering the challenges again.

I entered the Framing IV challenge and immediately submitted the proof because I knew I was going to be traveling to Washington DC for two weeks. While in DC, I found out that my photo (see below) placed 5th but had been disqualified because it wasn't taken during the challenge dates.

I couldn't believe my photo had been disqualified, I had set the date/time on the camera as soon as I got it. I was finally able to check my camera and found that I had somehow set the year to 2008! By that time, I had already taken the photo below from my window at the JW Marriott in DC and submitted it to the Shadows VI challenge. I waited until the next day, hoping that I would have a low score and wouldn't have to worry about validation. However, after 70 votes, my photo was hovering right around 7. So I requested that my photo be disqualified because I didn't want it to end up on the front page only to be disqualified, taking the spotlight away from the eventual winners.

You can bet my camera is now set to the correct date/time! I have a photo in the Night Shot V challenge, but it's at 5.5 - no chance it's finishing top 5.

Good luck to everyone and check the date/time in your camera!

That's really too bad about the date on your camera, how frustrating!! I really liked both of your shots, your shadow entry was my favourite in voting before it disappeared.

No, I actually PM'd him and asked. I'm sure others did as well. He's an old-school member and I was wondering what the heck happened :-(

You know with daylight savings time just happened here I hadn't even considered my camera, I wonder if it is automatic or I have to do it. I haven't entered a challenge in a long time but I guess I need to check that just in case I find one I like.

Thanks for the reminder!!!!

Give me a break! No mean spirits intended. I guess everyone is so used to communicating only via the web they cannot understand or comprehend sarcasm or joviality without some sort of clue. If you need a smiley or some other clue then you are...oops...don't want to sound mean spirited again...

Has anyone ever heard of the proverbial straw?

SNAP!

What was the point of you posting your original post? Without tone, or context, how is anyone supposed to comprehend that you were just kidding? Your post was pointless and it seems to me that *you* were the one compelled to post without a good reason. I think you got called out for being not very nice and now you're lashing out. Can you not accept that without any tonal cues (or smiley faces) that it is impossible for anyone to discern your meaning? "I hate you." and "I hate you." seem exactly the same, but one is sarcasm -- so how about "I hate you. ;)"

I'm with Frisca.

The onus is on the communicatOR, not the communicatEE(s), to get the message across. Especially in a forum that is devoid of physical cues. It is entirely erroneous to expect everyone, or anyone, to just accept that everything typed out is meant in a joking, sarcastic, or jovial manner. It is also a comfortable mask to hide behind, if you can just say "I was only kidding, gosh!" when called out because one wasn't able to communicate well to begin with.

Now, for the OP, and I'm sorry that I'm asking this, but I'd like to bring up a point for the rest of the community:

Why would you wait to know what your score was going to do before communicating with SC about a rules violation that you knew about? I mean, don't take me wrong, I (and probably everyone else) appreciate your honesty and candor, but wouldn't it have been better to just let SC know of the transgression regardless?

My thinking is that perhaps you were fearing a suspension because of two quick violations, but I would also hope that, while rules themselves can't have any leeway in application, punishments, given certain extenuating circumstances, can certainly have leeway.

I am just pointing this out, because it is my hope that the community doesn't get the idea that it's ok to let things slide, just because scores aren't doing so well and that it's not all about front-page exposure and what-not. I love that you're honest and willing to put it all out there and that you have good, noble intentions, but this one small part stuck with me, so I had to touch on it.

Let's please not cover up our mistakes just because the image might be doing poorly. It is in our best interests as a community, as competitors, and as people, to admit our mistakes at all times and be honest and forthwith. I'd rather SC know that I accidentally entered two photos with date violations, than admit to one and cover up another, only to have them find out later. I lose any ground I had to stand on because of the mistake in that case, and wouldn't stand a chance hoping for softer punishment then. Do you not agree?

Or, maybe, I'm just being a little too stick-in-the-mud. I don't know.

Just to add my 2 cents. I had an image of mine DQ'd for date/time violations. I figured out what I did wrong and I thought I would share it. While checking my date/time on my D50 (and my new D90 too I suppose) the date and time are on separate lines kinda like this:
2010 / 03 / 18
15 : 42 : 43

Or something like that. When I went to go down to the next line for the time naturally I pressed down on the menu selector. Of course that doesn't move the cursor down but rather changed the year to 2009 when that field is selected. All I noticed at the time I did this was that the cursor didn't go down so I used the right button on the menu selector to get to the next line. Simple but significant.

Actually, and I'm going by memory here, but as soon as the OP figured out that both pictures were out of date, he let us know.

As I said, no harm intended, just a little public service announcement based on what was written.

While I have no problem with my photo being disqualified because I didn't ensure that my camera was set to the correct date, I probably wouldn't have made an issue of it if it had scored in the middle of the pack. I know I took the photo during the challenge dates, so it wasn't a moral issue for me. My main concern was for the eventual ribbon winners. Too often, we've seen where a photo spends 3 or 4 day on the front page before being DQ'd, taking exposure away from the eventual 3rd place winner.

For sure I wasn't concerned about any suspensions. I've been away from DPC for a while, what's another couple of weeks? :-)

In the interest of full disclosure, anyone visiting my profile will see that I submitted two photos taken with the same camera to challenges in between my two disqualifications. Both of these photos were taken when my camera date was set to 2008. I didn't request that the Site Council disqualify the photos, but they are free to do so if they want. They scored in the low 5's, so if they remove them it can only raise my average vote received. :-)
