The site runs a resizing algorithm for you. It's unlikely that this automated process will be as finely honed as the various ways you could do it yourself.

I think they are scaled down to fit. This also happens on a case by case basis to view the image on monitors of different resolutions. Better to resize and sharpen youself, however. Then it gets done the way you prefer it.

Thanks, Langdon!

Will you please force a resize on my posterior?

Obviously not as the available screen real estate on four of the five monitors I use on a regular basis have the screen real estate available to view the images full size, but only one of them is doing so. All of them are using the exact same software and browsers and settings, blah, blah, blah. Yet it only works on this - the computer I am posting from right now, the 27" iMac. The largest screen. There is a dramatic difference in image quality between how this screen shows the image and how every 'scaled' screen shows the image. When I viewed at home before I went to work I was blown away by the image quality and how great they looked. I get to work and I am viewing on a 24" screen and all of a sudden they look like crap. The same photos. Then I realize they are being resized. And when I stopped to watch them load, sure enough, they load full size and look great for about a tenth of a second before they are resized and look like...well, normal DPC images on my screen - no larger or better in quality. In fact, a lot look poorer in quality so much so that I stopped voting in the C2K challenge. A lot of the photos looked excessively processed, especially in the cloud/sky areas as well as a lot of them look to be very over-sharpened. I will review and re-vote 100% on my home screen.

That's weird...wonder why they display differently on your other monitors especially on your 24 inch monitor. I don't have any issues here. I am using a Apple Mac mini with the Safari browser and a 22 inch HP pavilion 22xi monitor and the images are displayed full of detail and at 1200x pixels.

The 22" HP screen (and most 24" screens) is 1920x1080, so must resize to show in full an 1200 pixels high image. The iMac 27" screen is 2560x1440 so no problem there. As someone already noted, this change may create a bias towards landscape images, as these will show nicely on smaller screens.

Right I get it but then the answer is to only go say up to 1000 x pixels in height and also in width for square images or as high as your monitor will allow anyway.

Not all my equipment is MAC and as I said, regardless of the screen size, I have the resolution necessary to see the images FULL SIZE but only one screen is doing so. This is what I cannot understand. I see the images full size on all my monitors for a brief second, only the 27" iMac keeps them that size. I have tried everything to stop this. I look at my own images at full size on all the monitors, even through my browser. But when viewed on DPC, all but one resizes them. This makes me think something in the detection of how or when to resize is not 100%.

WOW!!!! This feels like a Christmas present. I am always out of the loop and I missed this announcement. I replaced my old Mac with a 27" screen
and thought that the images at DP looked so much better...I did not realize there was a change in size. Thanks for doing this Langdon, it makes a
great difference and more importantly it is good to know that you are responding to the community. Happy New Year Everyone!

A new trend is emerging with unique aspect ratios to maximize the horizontal space while reducing the odds of having to scroll vertically. Interesting how we adapt. :-)

That was an intentional design change to help maximize screen real estate for the larger images.

Did the new sizes cause the voting scale to be only at the bottom? I haven't voted a whole lot lately, but I remember it being at the top.

Effective with tomorrow's new challenge announcement, we have raised the size limits on challenge entries ...

Since we are aware that this size increase will be problematical with smaller monitors, we will be incorporating automatic scaling of images to the available screen real estate. Since automatic scaling was first discussed in these forums, the algorithms have improved dramatically, so much so that we are confident quality will be maintained during any potential downsizing.

Please provide any feedback regarding the new adjusted 1200px voting experience late next week, as no changes to the voting experience will be made until then.

Enjoy! We welcome your comments and responses to this major change.

On all my other computers the images at first LOAD at full size then immediately resize to something smaller. Kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it? There is room on my current monitor to see the full size images and if I pull up one of my own I can see it at the 1200 pixel size. But not at DPC unless I am on my 27" screen.

same thing is happening for me, in fact the images are now smaller than before...they are however sharper and clearer so in the end all's good.....first world problems :)

I haven't voted yet, but I know I cannot do it unless I am home for that very reason. I can deal with the resizing, but the images take too long to load on that connection. Definitely need a good connection to the net.

CONGRATULATIONS FRED! The HUGE new size is especially amazing when a landscape opens up on my screen.

To be fair, Fred, you have been asking for this for so long that it would take too long to give proper credit to all of your names.

Also, FWIW, MANY of us have been advocating for this change for many years: individual names are meaningless in that context. But it's good to see you back, Fred!

Just popped in after some absence and WOW!!! was I pleasantly surprised. I have been asking and posting for extra size so often here in the past. Most of the times I got ridiculed and even attacked by many for my efforts.
Now it has become a reality...super and thanks Langdon. Just seems weird that everybody seems to have forgotten about my postings in this regard and no-one has even mentioned my name in this thread.
Anyway I am really happy and will start participating again because of this.
