Here are a couple of old challenges that might be vaguely similar in theme.

Results for Beauty In The Everyday

Results for Beauty In The Everyday II

Of course, I would encourage you to go much more avant-garde/experimental/radical/unorthodox than these if that is where the spirit leads you.

I'm sure DPC has had previous challenges based on the idea of Wabi Sabi and finding beauty or art in the everyday. I sure remember plenty of thread discussions on it. I took this recent challenge to be more of the same.

from Wikipedia: The avant-garde (from French, "advance guard" or "vanguard", literally "fore-guard") are works that are experimental, radical, or unorthodox, with respect to art, culture, and society. It may be characterized by nontraditional, aesthetic innovation and initial unacceptability.

The avant-garde pushes the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm or the status quo, primarily in the cultural realm.

This is okay. However, I have observed that the concept does raise the level of intolerance, by some aficionados, of others' art which fails to rise to their lofty standards.

Bear, that is very helpful.

I think what is confusing a lot of people with this particular challenge is the description. It just doesn't make sense. I think a new description, closer to what you have above, would be so much better. Even N/A would have have made more sense.

Thanks for sharing those Robert. I wasn't quite sure how to interpret this one, but that makes it a whole lot clearer.

As always, it will be what the entrants and the voters make it out to be. The concept being proposed is to take ordinary, everyday objects or life and see the beauty and grace and emotive content hidden in the most banal, ordinary things or scenes.

Edward Weston was good at it:

Robert Frank had it nailed:

Walker Evans did some amazing Polaroids at the end of his life:

There are SO many ways to approach this "topic" so, yeah, it's a "free study" but hopefully a free study of the banal or ordinary, not the beautiful and harmonious. And anyway, isn't the whole IDEA of "art" pretty much Free Study?

In answer to your question, HERE'S where the idea originated.

The challenge didn't originate there, but the concept of throwing "artsy" stuff in the mix every once in awhile will be done it seems.

Basically, a blurry, anything goes, "art" Free Study type challenge this is then. Correct? :-) Kind of what I thought, but good to get the clarification.

Where's the challenge suggestion thread for "Art in the Incidental"? I can't find it.

I'd love to see the discussion about it. Who initiated it. The premise behind it, etc...

Thanks.
