Golly gee whiz, then that would be a problem. LOL

My point is that with the subscription model there is always the potential for them to exceed your price-point and render your software useless, while with a one-time perpetual license you just need to keep your own hardware running.

I find it interesting that the whole "personal computer revolution" -- the overturning the situation where computing was limited to those with access to centrally-controlled computers owned by corporations, universities, and governments -- is slowly being undone, using the subterfuge of touting the "enormous computing power" of our phones, while conveniently de-emphasizing that they are largely useless without access to the network.

Unless your current software can't do something you need to do to achieve your artistic vision, why bother?

You do not rent anything from the Adobe Gods in the Cloud. My copies of Lightroom and Photoshop reside on 3 computers, only monthly verification is "in the cloud." I can use Adobe's Cloud Server if I want, but in my case, Dropbox works just fine.

And, I know all of you spend more than $10/month on Coffee or Tea.

Wasn't referring to where the software resides, nor cloud storage. Was referring to the "Adobe Gods in the Cloud" as being the ones who, as you pointed out, are the gatekeepers of "your" software. Also as I said, it's not that bad a deal. I, like GeneralE, just do not like the idea of SaaS. Never did. But to each his own.

eta: I don't drink coffee or tea, but I get your point. ;-)

I've never been a big fan of subscription software, but I do see value in the Ps/Lr "Photographer's Plan." It's software I use frequently, and it gives me access to the most up-to-date versions of both applications. In addition, all the features of what used to be Ps Extended are included in the subscription version. The perpetual license for Ps Extended used to run more than $1000 USD. If you calculate the original purchase price for Ps and Lr, then figure in occasional upgrades (not every cycle) the cost would still have been more than the current $9.95/mo. plan. Also, if you are inclined to do the research, you can occasionally score a 1-year subscription extension for as little as $85, putting the monthly cost at a little over $7.00 USD.

I thought I was happy with CS5 until I bought my Canon 80D. Having to convert the RAW files to a format CS5 understands is a nuisance, but all those duplicate files are also giving me a massive headache with storage space. And lately I've seen tutorials about some features I wish I had. I imagine one of these days I'll have to upgrade.

And then there is the GIMP - https://www.gimp.org/

Also free. Like Irfanview which is for babies like me, who wear their gardening clothes everywhere because they can't be bothered and their mentors/chaperones have given up.

I'm slowly switching to darktable on Linux. Feels better, but it takes some time to learn something new.

Nice and clean. I like it. I have to admit the Adobe Portfolio thing also piqued my interest, but it was unclear if it was included in the Creative Cloud subscription or not. Is this a new offering?

Thanks everyone.

Having a Cloud subscription for Lightroom and photoshop also offers you a couple of things that you might find useful, I know I do.

Spark Presentations - a great way to share a holiday, a subject or whatever you want with friends and family.
I have added spark presentations to my portfolio under Events and Photos Shoots.

Completely agree. I really don’t need the latest software with the latest gadgets, I can do most of the things I need to do with older software. Therefore my choice for Affinity Photo, for its £49 it offers an enormous amount of tools, there are lots of tutorials and although it doesn’t offer the same quality as Photoshop, it suits me fine.

Fortunately(?) my limited artistic vision and (unfortunately!) likewise limited budget let me get by using Photoshop on a computer running Mac OS 8.6 ...

I generally (or GeneralE) agree, but newer filters and features become available only for the most current versions and Operating System upgrades or even artistic vision upgrades sometimes force you to.

Best investment ever....always up to date, great tutorials. I couldn’t have ever afforded the CSPS in a million years...but $10 a month I can do that...I still haven’t paid in the subscription what I would have forked out for 1 very outdated CSPS pkg!!!

I’ll bet it will blow you away with all the new useful tools you’ll have at your fingertips.

It's been a while since I explored digital software tools. I still have PSP X4 (and use it) and Lightroom 3.6 (it still feels brand new).

So I need new tools. Looking at an upgrade for Lightroom, and potentially getting Photoshop, it seems these apps are now primarily marketed as subscription based services in the Cloud.

Is that what many/most of you are doing these days?
