I don't like the exclusionary side of invitational challenges. However, if done in the "Exclusive" challenges, where the second challenge is used to include the rest of the members, that's not bad once and a while. In other words, the two challenges:

Group A, those under 5'8"
Group B, those 5'8" and above

(facetious example)

Where group A + group B = All of DPC makes it work.

The mentoring (pairs) challenge has been suggested before, and it's a good idea.

Would be a great learning opportunity. The neophyte would make the entry, the "partner" would be revealed after voting closed, and both would get ribbons :-)

Bear, thats just about the best idea I have heard for a long long time. I'd be up for that.

I don't care for subset challenges - there is always someone who is not included in any. It gets devisive.

Yup, my vote also goes for some kind of invitational challenges, I wouldn´t mind if I didn´t meet the criteria, like some of you say, it would be interesting to see what some specific group of people can do with a camera.

hmmm, how 'bout this thought: Have a challenge where you can enter 2 or 3 or 4 (whatever number is decided on), and then placing is decided by either a total or avg. of your entries?

This is kind of along the same lines as the 'Encouraging Newbies thread', so I'm re-posting my post from that thread in this post in this thread (did ya follow that?) :-P

"I like the idea of 'extra' challenges every now and then. All kinds of different criteria sounds good. Since we have the multiple concurrent challenge thing going on now, maybe they could now and then run a pair of 'invitational' challenges?
For example: a 'Ribbon winners' and a 'Non ribbon winners',
or a 'People who have never scored a 6' and a 'People who have scored 6 and above', or a 'Straight from camera' and a 'Super advanced editing'
or any things like that.

Or maybe other things like: 'Guy members' and 'Girl members', 'Under 40 yrs old' and 'Over 40 yrs old' you could go on and on..."

hmm.

You're hitting on something I've fantasized about for a while-

A challenge in which you can make two entries!

There have been so many times I've wanted to enter two pictures, or have been unable to decide which I prefer and done nothing but toss a coin, and wondered how the other one would have done- though of course there's no way to find out.

I could foresee a lot of potential problems with this, but perhaps they wouldn't be intractable.

*shrug*

Very good point. Maybe a qualifier; lets say we must have entered xx amount of challenges in xx amount of time? The 5.5 is just a example, but I've learned a ton from some of the higher end average folks.

I don't think that division by average vote received is a very good way to break down DPC members at all.

First, you've got the people like bear_music, who are excellent photographers but have a low average because they frequently (knowingly) enter images that aren't likely to do well.

Second, you've got the people who have entered very few challenges or only one, so their average score is not even really an average at all.

Third, there's the fact that there are far more people with a sub-5.5 average than there are with an average over 5.5.

I like the idea of splitting the members into two groups, but I'm not sure this is the way to do it.

I like that idea, you could make it for the open challenges one for over 5.5 and the other for under 5.5 but with the same subject.

Another possibility would be people who have been here for over 12 months and those that have been here less the 12 months.
