The company I use (Photoguard, I think), insures all my equipment (to £2,500) plus would insure things like lap tops, in and away from home/studio, new for old on everything (inc accidental damage, I think), and provides me with several millions' worth of public liability cover. My premium is about £160 pa. I am pretty sure that it does not cover upset brides suing me for doing a bad job - that is a business risk, and a risk that you get paid for taking by the client. I think that it would be pretty hard to insure against the risk itself(or at least prohibitively expensive).

Well that quote above included public liabilty of £2,000,000, that's not bad. Unhappy customers however i'm not sure about.

Exactly - It is more the public liability and indemnity that I was interested in... What sort of rates do people pay and what companies do they use? I wouldn't know where to start looking!

That's just the equipment side of things though, which is a comparatively small thing.

If you're acting in a professional capacity then you're opening yourself up to all manner of potential legal activity (be it unhappy customers, someone tripping over your camera bag and suing you for negligence, ...) which is where public liability and indemnity comes in. The potential losses there far outway equipment costs.

I know plenty of people (not in photography) who operate without such insurance, but it's not a gamble I'd take.

Just did a quick quote for myself and my 'non existant' photgraphy business and it would cost £17 a month for me to be insured, that pretty much covers everything, including and lost/theft/damage/accidental damage to any equipment whilst out and about of upto £2500 per single item, you can have more but i wouldn't need it yet.

£200 a year. Upto you whether you can afford it really as to whether it's expensive or not.
This was just a quick quote, thought it would help to get some figuers in here.

Like I said, I have checked, and my equipment is covered by my home policy for theft etc while out and about (Which is what I would be most concerned about).

Regarding the Wedding stuff, what cover do you get and what are you actually covered for?

How many of you guys who do things like Wedding photography as a sideline actually have insurance, such as third party liability and something that will cover you if the bride decides to sue because she doesn't think your photos captured the essence of her day!

Also, cover for your equipment. Mine is currently covered theft/loss etc while using for personal use, though I assume I would have to have different cover for professional equipment?

What companies do you guys use and what sort of prices would I expect to pay?

ANy advice on this matter would be good!

Thanks,
AL.
