I did wonder about just cropping heavily . . and it's a better size and weight - but would say 5 fps and 20+ AF points have been too much to ask for in a £2k camera ?

muz64 I don't really want to change to Nikon at this time unfortunately, and in terms of lenses my current most used is the 100-400. So reach is pretty important to me.

Worst bit is that cameras are just tiny pc's now and every year they cram more and more features in, so it's almost a case of if you can't see what you want - wait 18 months and you'll have the choice of 2 or 3 more to look at. Trouble is I've kept waiting and could do with deciding whether FF is the answer for me.

Thanks for the input though folks.

1D III - Great FPS and AF, plus a 1.3 crop seems a reasonable compromise, but the thing is too darn heavy ! Especially as I frequently walk about with my 100-400L sitting on the front of my camera . . I guess I could send off for a 'Charles Atlas' course (if they still do them :- ) )

I have both but once I can afford to buy a D700 or another D3, I will be dropping my D200. And unless I get really into sports shooting, or wildlife shooting, I will never go back to a cropped sensor camera.

May not be too helpful, and possibly a bit sacrilegious, but have you thought of a Nikon D700? It has the IQ, high ISO, FPS and focus. If I wasn't so invested in Canon lenses, I'd pick one up in a flash. As it is, I can't wait to see how my 135L looks on a 5D2 when I buy it next year sometime.

The trouble is that I can't see any Nikon equivalents matching the 35L, 85L, and 135L.

What do you usually shoot?

Any other thoughts ?

Hmmm . .

I'll tell you my dilemma . . I want to change my camera and I can't see an obvious one to change to.

The contenders are :-

50D - Fairly good FPS - not sure if anything new has been added to the AF isnce my camera, and I don't really like the feel of it : (

5D mk 2 - I have waited eagerly for this, but am a little disappointed in the FPS and them sticking with 9 af points plus my favourite lens shrinks : (

So I guess I want a faster shooting, quicker focussing 5D 2, or a smaller lighter 1D 3

Any useful ideas apart from wait even longer to see what comes out ?

I guess what I would ideally like to do is hire the two cameras and see how I get on with them, maybe if I actually tried a FF it would clear up my concerns. The only problem is hiring isn't that cheap and I would rather put the money towards a future camera than give it to a shop.

This is assumption on my part but I don't think I'd be able to give up the speed and reach of my crop. I could combine a lens with a 1.4x but I'd lose some light, but then more of the glass is used on a ff sensor so optical imperfections are reduced, making a lens a little sharper.

For speed, cropped; for reach, an f4 or f2.8 with 1.4x

Probably not adding anything constructive but hey, I love you all, and it is the thought that matters right? :)

You can, just buy one with that little s next to the 1D. :D

I just recently went from FF back to 1 series for my backup. Although going from a 5D isnt really stepping backwards when you go to a 1 series. Except for the FOV through the lens. I've had several crop bodies and I would never go back to a 1.6 crop body. Even as an everyday camera.

I know one person, not a DPCer, who went from a 5D back down to one of the 1D series cams. He did it not for lens length, but for the higher burst speed.

Just buy more lenses if needed. :-)

I know it's not a clear title .. . but the question is has anyone gone from a crop sensor to Full Frame . . then reverted back to crop - or is it really a one way trip ?

I'm struggling to know which camera to go for next and having never shot with a FF, I don't want to make the jump then regret the lack of lens length .
