Mine wasn't working but it seemed to be a java problem, so I reinstalled it and Roes worked fine. I'm not sure I can ditch Java yet.

A reminder to WHCC fans...their large (and small) print sale is this week! Perfect timing for me!

I just bought a bunch of nice 8 ply 16x20 mats for 11x14 (unfortunate aspect ratio but a lot cheaper than I could get 10x15 custom cut), backing boards and bags, and the sale is a perfect time for me to make some "stock" product I can sell cheaper than my usual canvas or framed prints. It was around $89 (on sale) for 25 of them and other than having 11x14 openings, they're very nice. I think I'll have to start shooting more stuff for 11x14!

not sure. i know i had a heck of a time getting rOES to work with Java 7. WHCC sent me a script to run to fix it.

I'm sure WHCC and everyone that uses ROES is prepping an alternative.

Now that Java's security holes have become news, what happens to ordering through Roes?

I note that there;s a new option in their software list...Labprints. Seems to be a third party site (partner) that you can use to order.

Anyone try it...is it better or worse than Roes?

The answer I got today was to order the closest size and THEY do the trim for $1 a size.

I've used WHCC for a long time and everything is great. I have done a lot of canvas wraps and a few float wraps all with excellent results. Service is the best. I too crop in ROES and add my own borders.

Hey Judy you can probably give them a call tomorrow to find out, I havent down any custom sizes and not sure if they can. Most of their stuff is templated, does their catalog even have an option for custom sizing? I could be wrong either way.

Does anyone know how to use ROES to order a custom size print? Or is that even possible? I normally have just ordered the closest size and trimmed, but I want this larger piece to be mounted and I don't want to have to trim a larger (32.5 x 26.25), mounted piece.

Any help is appreciated.

WHCC business cards are crap. They are flimsy and cheap feeling. The rep cards are more expensive but better quality. But you'd really be better off going with someone like overnightprints.com. Or MOO...those are nice, too.

Anyone going to get the PhotoVision 2010 subscription that WHCC sent the promo code for? Has anyone ever watch a PhotoVision DVD before? $39.00 seems like an awefully good deal...

I started another thread asking about business cards, but thought I would ask in here since I'm a WHCC user...Do they print business cards? I don't see them in ROES. I'm leaning toward printing 2 sided with MOO, does WHCC have any 2 sided prints that I could just cut out?

You can do borders in Thrifty Prints but not in regular Paper Prints.

You can crop in ROES...that's fine it turns out. If you load to their FTP site, you have to provide the exact size.

But, if you want borders, like I have done to get a photo to fit into a different aspect ratio, or just to have a white border, you have to add that yourself.

But unlike FTP uploads, ROES is more flexible in letting you size your prints.

Hi there,

I placed my first orders with WHCC, I did their test prints, got them back and they were great. Then placed an order for a client, and what I'm having trouble with in this process is when I order and place borders around a 5x7 print for example, the actual print size is bigger then a 5x7. Thanks Sandy! That's helpful.

I think I decided to pass on the floats...what I am really interested in trying is the standouts, as a no framing alternative to unframed canvas.

But as far as I know, they haven't been on sale yet, unless I missed it!

Neil, I don't know if your sizing question has been answered, but I use WHCC and Roes for all my printing. You don't need to resize if your photo looks okay when dragged into the box. Like I printed an 11x14 for a client, but then she decided she wanted an 8x10 as well. Since the crops aren't that much different, I just drug the one I had saved as an 11x14 into the 8x10 box and positioned it how I wanted it, and it worked just fine.

I haven't tried the wraps but I went to the NY Expo a couple of months ago and saw some samples. They don't do anything that doesn't look awesome! I LOVE them!!!

Has anyone tried one of their float wraps yet...today's the last day of the sale, I'm tempted...

So from what I can tell, you can get Lustre paper wrapped as well as Canvas?

I'd love to hear what people think of each.

I've been ordering 11x14's for my portfolio to take around to stores/galleries.

But since most of the time my shots are 2:3 aspect ratio, I've been creating 11x14's by putting a big white border like this:



I've also used that technique to order some mounted prints as samples and gifts.

But I am still creating a specific file for 11x14 @ 300dpi. And then I have to save the PSD and the JPEG both, in case I want to change the text, for example.

I was just wondering if someone knew if that was still what they wanted. Roes certainly doesn't enforce it.

WHCC had a kick ass spread at Imaging USA.

Their floating canvas wraps...very cool. Also - I gotta get some shit printed on that metallic paper. Its not for everything, but hot damn does it look good.

that's true. i actually have to do that on some team photos (like a football team) in order to make sure that no particular ratio will crop out part of the team ;-)

I see it as meaning that you still need to crop each image differently for each aspect ratio -- just that you assign those crop instructions within the online system rather than doing it manually and saving each version separately. However, it seems that if you only want one specific crop/look to the photo, it would be necessary to add a border and crop that ...

BTW: How about a link to these folks for those of us not familiar with them? :-)

How do you address the issue of varying aspect ratios/cropping doing that?

if you mean today, there is no issue. for example, if someone orders a package that includes an 8x10, 2-5x7s, and 8 wallets, i upload one file then check the default croppings applied for each item; if necessary i move and/or resize the crop with the online cropping tool.

does that make sense?
