The other week I managed to drop my D60 and break the shutter mechanism, I sent it off to Nikon for repair and they've coem back with an estimate totaling around £100 ($145) ive taken about 15000 photos with it, and really like it, however im not now sure how much its even worth even if it wasnt broken, anybody know how much they are worth? and if you think its worth repairing it. ebay isnt being particularly useful in trying to find a price since everyone seems to be selling it for the same price as a new d3000!

I guess the real question is can you afford to upgrade? Other D60's seem to go for about that much but you know this one will have a new shutter, the ones on ebay probably will not. Ive certainly spent too much on camera repair in the past.. but I still have them & they are still going strong

Edit to add... Sorry to hear about the droppage. No one like to hear that

Hmm...over here, gently used D60 are selling for about $250 CDN. So entirely up to you...though I don't consider the D60 to a D3000 to be an upgrade...just the opposite in fact! So why set yourself back?!

I upgraded from a D40 (entry-level dslr, did its job wonderfully, I outgrew it) and moved up to a D90. Big jump but at least it was a jump forward. So take that into consideration.

wel thats the thing, if its costing the same as the ting is worth to repair it then its pretty much a write off so id much rather go for the upgrade, however even though the D90 would be the logical upgrade (sticking with nikon, ive got far too many lenses to be swapping). I dont think I could resist looking at a D300s

But, why?! Why go back from a solid DSLR to what is essentially a p&s?! When I went looking for an upgrade, after doing my homework and buying camera at a very reputable camera store not the local cheapie electronics shop, they wondered basically wtf I'd go with something so new and unproven, while the D90 has a terrific rep and is a very solid performer and retains its value.

If I were you I'd PM Shutter-for-Hire and Sarampo for starters, see why they, and me, are very much dedicated D90 users.

nah, i was just stating that the rip-off merchants on ebay are selling D60s for the same price as a D3000, if i was going to upgrade id probably get a D90 now, although ideally I would have waited a while and try and pick up a D300s cheap when its replacement comes out. Even a D5000 isnt really an upgrade, video and a flip screen basically

D300s is the top nikon SLR for the DX sized sensor... :P

Isn't the D90 due to be replaced? According to [insert his name here], Nikon seems to replace or upgrade a camera about 1½ years after it comes out, and the D90 will be 2 years old in August.

I think $145 is a no-brainer-yes, I'd just repair it.

Your logical upgrade path is going to be to the D90/D300 family, which is going to cost substainally more than that repair. I'd plop the repair cost down and wait for the next body families to be released, which will push down the cost of D90/D300s, then upgrade to a D90 or D300. If you want to save some $$$, look at the used or refurb markets.

So, if you can wait it out, I think your money is better invested in repair short-term, then wait for next bodies' release to push down the price of an intermediate-body purchase. Otherwise look at the D90/D300 used or refurb. I would not even consider the Dx000 series, even for comparison pricing -- that's an entirely different (lower) class body than what you already have.

In the end I went for the sensible option and got the repair, I'll actually wait until I really need a D300 or equivant body before upgrading not just using this as an excuse! Thanks for all your advice.
