Hello Everyone! =)

I will be studying abroad in Switzerland (Lugano) from August to December and will take a school trip to Iceland in October! I wanted to ask you guys if there is any "must have gear", photography related or not, for these two places? I don't think I can afford new lenses but maybe some helpful filters or anything like that? :p Also any special places around the area?

Thanks!

Based on what you said, I'm 99.999% such you are studying at the most amazing, awesome, incredible, wonderful school in the history of the entire universe. If you get the option, live in the Giardino dorm. It's the best one : )

They never had Academic Travel to Iceland when I was there! Jealous! Who's leading it?

If you have any questions about Lugano, Switzerland, or Franklin, feel free to message me. I love talking about them : )

As for photo ops in Switz, they will probably bring to to Valle Verzasca during orientation. Be sure to bring your camera for that (and a polarizer). The views from the top of Mt San Sal would also be helped by a polarizer since it is often humid and hazy. The mountains have some amazing small towns with the most beautiful people (the elderly definitely age well there). for the people, a large reflector would come in handy. The food is also amazing, so if you want some food shots, a reflector can help there too. I think the lenses you have will be more than adequate.

I've never been to Iceland, but if you don't have a good, lightweight tripod, that would definitely be a must to capture the beautiful landscapes.

I'm so excited for you! Tell Lugano I miss it!

You are 100% correct! =) and I am soo happy to hear that it's a great school! I am really excited! I have no clue what dorm I'm getting but giardino was one of my top choices, I'll find out during the first day of orientation ;)

Yes, the Iceland trip is new this year! I had to pick it after seeing all the amazing Iceland photos from DPC photographers hahaha Professor Brack Hale will be leading it, he seems very nice and will also be my Senior Thesis advisor!

Thanks for the advise, can you believe I don't have a polarizer!?

Hey Justin,

From my limited experience in Iceland one thing you might find useful is a graduated filter because generally the rugged rocky landscapes tend to be rather dark due to the dark nature of the volcanic rock formations not to forget the very bright skies midday, so exposure might be an issue with landscapes . one of those stopped down filters for long exposure if you are into rivers and such, you definitely should remember your tripod for northern lights!!

cant really think of anything else..

October would be a nice time since all the autumn colors come out but the weather might not be very pleasant, well you never know!

I'm planning to move to Iceland within a month or so, so I'll most probably be there in October. If you want maybe we can meet up and go on a small photo trip :)

Best of luck in your studies and trip!!

Wow, with Hale as your Travel leader, that's going to be an amazing trip! He's one of the best profs at FC. His teaching style is fun and interesting and he's beyond intelligent. And, of course, he's the best fit for you since you're an Environmental Studies major. I studied International Communications, so I only took a class or two from Hale, but they are among my favorite classes I took. He's known by students from all majors because his classes are so good and because he's a great guy who is involved with so many different aspects of the school.

To keep this on-topic, I think a graduated ND filter might come in handy, but you could always create similar effects in post-processing. If you have to choose between the graduated ND and the polarizer, the polarizer would win hands down by me.

Another important thing to have is a very, very comfortable backpack. Hale's trips often have a lot of hiking, so you'll want to be able to carry as much as you can without killing your back.

Congrats on the decision to go and good luck with your thesis! I hope you have an amazing time!

Thanks, I will look into the graduated filters! ... and sounds great! I would definitely be up for a small get together! (if they give us some free time, not sure how it works) =)

OK! So I will be in Iceland tomorrow!!! I am so excited! this is the 'final' schedule for my class:

10th Reykjavik Peninsula (blue lagoon)
11th Reykjavik Peninsula
12th Grabok
13th Grimsey
14th Myvatn,Skutustaoir, Namafjall
15th Husavik, Asbergi, Jarobooin
16th Myvatn, Hverfjall
17th Godafoss, Laugarvatn
18th porsmork, Seljalandfoss and Skogarfoss
19th Geysir, Gullfoss, pingvellir
20th Reykjavik

I asked my Professor if we would have some time on our own and it looks like we will have a few hours on the 20th from around lunch time to dinner. There is a chance lovethelight will also be there at that time and we were thinking of meeting up just to say hello! There is no final plan on meeting yet but if anyone else is in Reykjavik on the 20th, and would like to meet, let me know ;)
