If I remember right, cpanaioti remarked last year that she got the idea for this process in a workshop. Or something like that. I've been doing google searches every once in a while, looking for other people, or groups of people, doing this. Can't find anything! I mean, nothing. It's got to be out there, somewhere, maybe under a different name?

I just created a Set on Flickr & named it Flip and Blend. When I did a search on Flip, only my own images came up.

It's a bit addictive ... I've been playing with the blending modes, this one is overlay and the final 90ยบ is missing but I like the colors.
pixelpig has a special talent to give so bright colors and shapes !

I really like the full image except for that hard line you see running down both sides

I have tried to get rid of it but can't do it. Anyone have any ideas how to blend that hard line in with the rest of the photo?

I think Robert ( Bear_Music) had a solution to that in the last SC. Check out the thread linked in the first post.

From the earlier thread:

1. Copy the whole final layer to clipboard.

2. File>new will open a new, empty file with same image size as what's on clipboard

3. Paste the copy to the new image file

4. Use the rectangular marquee to select the top half of the image down to but not including the dark line

5. cntrl-x will cut the selection but keep it on clipboard

6. cntrl-v will paste the selection on top of the previous layer

7. use the 4-way arrow tool to move the selection so it overlaps correctly, covering the dark line on the underneath layer

8. use the crop tool to crop away the excess on the top from moving it.

I tried out Bear_Music's method. It works!

I thought I signed up last week, but I guess I just thought about it. I'd like to play.

Just enter the image ID number rather than the whole web address :-)

LOL - I've been playing with this theme for the last month in the "Anything Goes"
side-challenge. I'm really looking forward to another month of this fascinating process.

Here are some results from October:

I had a request to post instructions for getting the spiral effect:

These usually start once I've done the basic flip/blend of horizontal/vertical/90 degrees with difference mode though I've been experimenting lately with doing just one of horizontal or vertical (depending on the image) then a few 90 degree flips in a row, then starting the spiral, or starting the spiral then doing another horizontal or vertical flip etc.

The spiral effect is created by using the options in the edit>transform section of the menus. I usually choose rotate from there but you can apply scaling options at the same time. By scaling down and rotating you get the spiral effect. I usually start with lighten mode, rotating in one direction, then I'll add a few rotations in the opposite direction using the darken blending mode and so on. It all depends on what starts popping out of the image as to what I do next.

I've found that images that have some areas blown out with some parts correctly exposed work well for this. If you have a series of exposures you are using for HDR, choose one of the brightest ones to do the flip/blend/spiral (or whatever moves you) on.

Most important, experiment and have fun.
