I have a D5000 and an SB600 speedlight. Is there a way to trigger the speedlight wirelessly? I have a wire cable, but wireless would be handy. I read that its possible to trigger it with the on camera flash. If that is possible, can you give me the details? Thanks for the help.

I use a Nikon wireless speedlight commender SU-800 that I use with my D80. It works very well. I have the SB600 and SB800; not sure if you have to have the SB800 for it to work. May give you a place to start.

Hi John,

Unfortunately, it's not a question of the flash, but of the camera.

Your SB-600 does have the ability to remote fire via an onboard flash, but your D5000 does not have commander mode, which means using your flash to trigger other flashes.

You can go for the SU-800 from Nikon, but this is infrared only, or you can look for radio triggers, there are a lot of cheaper options out there.

Posting for JCrest01: I had a feeling that was going to be the case. Thanks for the help. I'm going to look into the options as you suggested.

You can also go with a wireless radio trigger system. The Sb600 does not have the required connector, but a hotshoe adapter is available for a small cost. This approach means you will be fully manual on the speedlight.

I use these with my SB600 and find them to be very reliable:

Cybersync Transmitter

Cybersync Receiver

Hotshoe Adapter (for the SB600) -call Customer Service to check which of the two shown will work well with your SB600-I ordered mine elsewhere, can't remember where--I think Flash Zebra or something)

the necessary connection cable for the receiver to hotshoe adapter is included with the receiver)

I'm going to give them a call. These are the things I didn't think about before. Thanks again for the help.
