Hey everyone! I stumbled onto this site recently and I am looking forward to the challenges. I was attending Academy of Art University as an online student but can no longer afford the tuition. This site will continue to push me to keep my camera in hand and explore other forms of photography. I look forward to learning more and continuing to grow as a photographer.

Welcome. Don't mind the weirdos around here. LOL They're usually the ones with the best (or should I say most interesting) advice.

I am looking forward to getting some critiques on my photos. Good, bad and even ugly. We have so much to learn from each other and I hope that this site will offer all kinds of advice. Any advice on how to be successful on this board?

How does DC Prints work and has anyone sold any of their work?

Diana,

Welcome! You will find lots of good advice. Just keep a tough skin and take the comments and critiques and apply what you want. I have been around here for a while (not as long as some) and I love this place.

As far as DPCprints - I have never put anything on there, but I know of people that have sold some.

Look forward to seeing your work... headed to your profile now!

You won't get as many comments/critiques as you hope. However, you can post your images any time and ask for critiques -- there are many people who are happy to help.

Surprisingly, though, the best way to learn is to comment on other people's photos. Don't just comment on the good photos, comment on everything. It makes you really sit down and figure out what makes a good photo. Why did this photo work so well, in your opinion? Why did another photo fall completely flat, and is there a way that they could have improved the photo. It really develops your critical thinking. Plus, it's much easier to do that on someone else's photo than on your own. :)

Welcome, btw!!!

Enjoy, I've learned a lot of valuable tips while on here, had some good laughs, and found the cheapest places to buy the best equipment, so you are in the right place.

Comments from others help, although they may not agree with you, it's all part of learning and it gives you motivation to push harder.

greetings and salutations. be sure to visit my profile and tell me how brilliant i am. no one here seems to understand that i am a photographic genius. if einstein and ansel adams could have had a baby together, i would have been their love-child.
haha...in all seriousness though...i really am awesome, but i digress.

you have some nice shots on your site, especially the maternity ones, however, that thing is SLOW. It may just be my connection but i dont think so. Something like that would drive me away as a customer.

Thanks a ton smardaz! I need to get a "real" site going. That one was done on Intuit.com and I HATE it. One more reason to re-due the site... on my way to your profile now.

A question for all, is there a special place to post Boudoir/Nude pictures?? Can I post them in my portfolio?

Welcome D! Here's wishing you many happy hours and a few gems of wisdom and insight from your DPC experience. You may want to check out one of more of the side challenges. It's a fun and relaxed way to meet people, and share photos and thoughts. Commenting on the photos of others is one of the best ways to sort out what you like in your own photos. Comments will be slow coming in if you don't actively "work" your portfolio here by sharing and commenting on other DPC photos.
I look fwd to seeing you around the community here at DPC.

That's a first class camera you have. I hope you didn't spend all of your school funds to get it. I upgraded to the D7K a few months ago, from Fuji S3 Pro, and haven't picked up the Fuji since.

I have been at this for 6 years now... working with a D50, which is a good camera but I have pushed it as far as I can. My wonderful husband worked overtime to get it for me for Christmas. :) I hope to expand even more as a photographer with this new camera! I just got it three days ago so I am still working with it. I really like doing natural light portraits and I was having a hard time pushing my D50 in some of the low light because ISO 800 on it has a LOT of noise. Any tips on the new camera would be great!

Here are a couple of 7K tips.
When shooting center weighted average metering, pushing the "OK" button puts the metering back to the center of the frame. It's handy when shooting active subjects.
Center weighted average metering gives you the fastest focusing for things like birds flying by.

It takes about 1/2 second for the IS system to spool up when you press the shutter button, so when you are expecting to shoot a moving subject start tracking with the shutter 1/2 pressed while you wait for "the shot" to develop.

You can set it up to put all your stills on one card, and vids on the other, which makes it nice to download them into different files. You can set it to overflow from one to the other if you think you may run out of space on one card.

It's very easy to accidentally turn the shooting program dial by accident, like from AP to SP, so set up each one so that you will be all right if it happens. I/E set the shutter speed for SP at a reasonable speed if you are shooting in AP, so if it gets switched it will be OK anyway.

You can use it with the older manual Ai Nikkor glass * look for cut away parts of the back of the aperture ring to indicate Ai lens, non Ai is smooth all the way around*
You can use it in manual or AP, with metering in the AP mode with almost any Ai lens, which was one of the big features that helped me make the 7K my choice.

If you put playback on any mode except full screen, you can use the ISO button to go to thumbs, then to a calendar view if you keep pushing it. It makes it easier to find a shot that's on the card from last week or month, esp if you know the date.

The built in mic can be adjusted up or down, but it's too sensitive for loud live music. I play music and it's necessary to use an external mic and attenuator to record loud live. It's in the "Movie" settings / shooting menu.

The 7K is an awesome piece of equipment, and it does things that used to be a chore with great point n' click ease.

PM me if you have anything specific to ask about it.
I am still learning too, but more slowly now that I have a comfortable grasp of all the settings that I normally use.

i would look into the side challenges, i found that people will visit your portfolio often if you enter a lot of side challenges. More so than the main challenges, since we don't know who you are when the main voting is taking place.
