When it comes to the technical side of web site's I'm an idiot. I would like to design a couple of websites using Dreamweaver CS5. I've got some experience in with it and I've taken some design classes so I shouldn't have too much trouble where that's concerned. My problem, aside from being an idiot, is that I'm having trouble setting it up. Here's what I've done so far...

paid for a domain name at GoDaddy.
paid for web hosting at GoDaddy.
set up server in Dreamweaver successfully it seemed.
Opened up a new page in my new site folder and did a quick 'under construction' page.
Pressed save.
Went to check page and I get GoDaddy stuff.

I'm assuming I made a mistake in the type of hosting I picked. If any of this doesn't make any sense it's because I am indeed a technical idiot.

I am sure I am much more of an idiot at this than YOU are, but I'd so love to learn about it as well.
I dabbled a little bit with it years ago, but then gave up.

One thing I remember from back then that some things during the setup stage weren't instant, they took time to "trickle through" or whatever the term was that I was told.

Is it possible that that applies here, too?

When I go to the page it says "Future Home of Something Quite Cool". It gives a link for the owner to type in username and password which take me you my accounts page at Google.

Did you actually upload the files you created with Dreamweaver to your hosting site?

haha, that occurred to me just now. When I do Dreamweaver stuff at work it's pretty automatic, but the IT guy set me up. Trying that...

scratch that... I'm just insanely confused... but working on it. I'll figure it out eventually.

Dreamweaver can do all your uploading for you, when you've setup your site you need to put the remote server details in including ftp address, username, password. Once you've done all that for the remote site, you can just sync what you've done on your local site to the remote site without any messing about with an FTP client.

Getting this setup right makes it much easier to keep your remote site up to date.

Edit for repetition.

I did that. I put in that info under servers, I clicked on Test and it said it was successfull, then I pushed save.

Are you seeing it now or is it still giving you problems?

If it's not working, try going to your site and hit , you need to do a full refresh or you might be seeing the old site cached.

....and then?
03/05/2011 04:06:40 PM · #11
I'm still getting GoDaddy crap.

David, ...and then that's it. I pressed save, made a quick page in my new site folder, named it default, saved it. I must have missed a step while trying to set it up or something.

Are you actually syncing your local site to the remote site, it won't upload automatically, you need to tell it when you want to sync. If I remember right, you can do it through the menu or there's a little circular arrow on the sites panel, been a while since I used it mind you.

I pushed the circular arrow on the sites panel, went back to my page and refreshed. Nothing.

If you have published in dreamweaver then check on the host there is not another index.* file. Not sure about GD but a number put up say an index.htm and then if you were using PHP and out up say index.php.... It will see the index.htm first. The host info should give you the sequence that it looks for.....

It asks for my godaddy username and password then brings me to my accounts page. I'll go back and have a re-look.

I do see the page with "Coming Soon - Future home of something quite cool"

Godaddy is a little slow and there servers take a while syncing up. So give it a while if it still isn't showing up for you.

Will do, thanks.

DW must be set to the correct FTP site address
DW must be connected to the remote server
You must use the "Put" command
You can view both the local and remote site or a split screen of both from thee DW file console
See picture below

check the nameservers... that is typically the first thing I do. I register with godaddy but I host with hostgator. Great service and easy to manage.
