I have always been a fan of doing Blackboard and Whiteboard tricks.
Yet another idea.

I really like this idea. I wonder if everyone's camera is suited to such a challenge though.

I have a stupid question - what are these used for? I have both on my camera and haven't figured out what I'm supposed to do with them - I'd appreciate an example of one of the 'tricks' though! :)

Neither of my digicams have the ability to shoot blackboard/whiteboard. While I think you can do some cool effects, I think that (a) it wouldn't be fair and (b) you'd probably end up seeing some of the lowest voting scores ever from the non-photographers. :-)

Someone enlighten me on what this means? I'm ignert. :)

It's basically a literal black and white mode -- think of it as taking a picture in line art mode (or pen and ink) if that means anything to you. It's meant to be used, for photographing things like text in books or text off a black/whiteboard. I don't know why camera manufacturers think anybody would do that, but it can make for some interesting shots. I'm trying to think of where I've seen one before...

*going off to search and leaving post open*

Couldn't find one. Think converting to B&W and then converting to bitmap -- at least that's what my memory is telling me.

Patella,

This sounds like it might be the same as the TEXT mode on my SONY CYBERSHOT DSC S75. If this is so, I wonder if John''s F707 also has a TEXT mode?

We used a special film (can't remember what it is at the moment) when I worked at the hospital I have referred to before for photographing "line art". When my boss needed to make slides for a presentation, some of them included diagrams, etc. It was more effective to use it than regular film. (Now that I'm posting this, I hope I am remembering this correctly). Anyway there are applications for it, and since people are going digital, looks like manufacturers need to include this feature for medical/technology, etc.

I love taking random pictures using blackboard/whiteboard modes.. check out my gallery - i''ve got a bunch. Some are dumb, I like the people ones the most. Lemme know what you guys think.

Doing a challenge with this would be a lot of fun, but not fair if not everyone has this ability.

uh. I forgot to put my sig in here .. and now I don''t remember the link commands.. sooo.. rely on copy/paste.

You can achieve much the same effect by applying the "Posterize" adjustment (2 levels for pure B+W). This is also similar to shooting to a high-contrast (graphic arts) film, which is designed to have a hard-edged transition from black-to-clear (no gray shades like regular print/slide film).

You might want to shoot in this mode if you don''t want to have to memorize everything in that file cabinet you''re rifling, or if you want to copy the professor''s notes without having to write.

I believe that most Text Modes are in fact whiteboard modes or blackboard modes, I know I have seen one or two that are, some have a setting to shift back and forth. Most are Whiteboard. I believe a lot if not most cameras can do this in one way or another, you just have to figure out how.

The example already given is a good one to start:

There is a lot you can do with it to get interesting shots. Either you can go for a really clean shot and try to find flat backgrounds which give you lots of pure white and black space or you can play with texture. For example the outlet picture in the above gallery.

In anycase i think it is interesting because it is different, and I do think that at least half the cameras can do it. Perhaps however others could adjust contrast on B&W to get the same effects?

Oh, I should add for those who might want to play around with the mode, that like most things, Blackboard and whiteboard depend on light. I have not become an expert but similar pictures with different lighting come out very differently.

Try different things, including flash.

photoshop can do the effects, although it may look better, but it would be a fun topic....makes some interesting photos too...

I am a Photoshop super-ultra novice.... what filters/effect is that?
07/13/2002 02:28:07 PM · #18
just go to image-> levels, after you convert it to B&W

Or use the "posterize" command...

As has been established there are various ways to get this effect. It's actually much easier to do it on your computer than to get the right effect using your camera alone because you can adjust brightness and contrast before converting to black & white, but some of the manipulation required is against the rules of this site.

If everyone is able to take part, it would be an interesting challenge.
07/13/2002 07:30:41 PM · #21
This is real black and white... I think this could be fun but I fear there are a lot of cameras that won't do it.. :(
07/13/2002 08:22:37 PM · #22
I say it is fifty/fifty but I guess basically people could post if they had it... kinda a guessing game.

What if there were two challenges? and you could only enter one.
One challenge with special effects that not everybody could enter and one challenge that anybody could enter

That's an idea.. but then people would feel left out maybe? And once you do it for b/w-board, you gotta do it for other features too (that seem interesting). A camera i used to use (those floppy disk kind, ick) had a negative effect on it (which was pretty cool), but my olympus doesn't have that feature. I'd feel bummed out I couldn't fully participate.

<shrug>

hmm.. this gave me idea, but i'm heading to web site or challenge suggestions for this..

It's easy to do a negative effect on your computer though and I gather we're allowed to do that - one photo in the fear challenge did and I read somewhere on the forums that they had checked first whether they were allowed to do so. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
