I shot that at f8, so maybe like f10 or 11? As far as the vignette goes, that's my first time ever doing one, and I did it by googling how to do it in Gimp about ten minutes before the submission deadline...lol... So I really had no clue what I was doing, I'm going to have to research vignettes further. Again thank you so much for the critique and I am sure I'll be consulting you further in this thread

f/11 certaily gives you a bit more area in focus than f/8, but I really wouldn't know with this picture if that would have made the difference or not. You'd have to use a longer exposure (or higher ISO), and it also gives you less blur in the background and all that. When I look at your picture, it almost looks as if the bird was moving its head just a little, which would show up greatly in that dark beak area (imagine a ball with things sticking out, if the ball rotates a little, the ball itself probably stays in shape but the ends of the things sticking out would move a lot and possibly appear blurry). Whatever movement might have been there would be magnified with slower shutter speeds. So ... I don't know :)

Out of curiosity, did you blur the background in post-processing? If so, you did a very good job of it. Vignetting, yeah, it's used to draw the eyes in from the edges to the subject. It is most often overdone, and ends up attracting attention as a feature on their own rather than drawing in the eye. It also often changes the overall colour of an image (as it seems to have done in this one). Your colours are so beautiful in this picture, you wouldn't want to spoil that. One thing you can do when blending in a vignette is to do it either in LAB mode, or use luminosity blending mode in RGB mode; both have less impact on colour.

Some really fantastic images on that site. I submitted this yesterday, will most likely get rejected but it's a shot I've always liked. Maybe a little too busy with all the small branches?

PS2 I confused myself in my self-critique :)
I will just wait for the reject.

I plan to tweek my Never seen on DPC image on and see how it does. I have major flaws that I need to try to adjust (compensate for) in it though.

I thought that this one was one of my better images and it got the x. Any critique on this one?

I had liked it in the challenge and had given it a 7. For 1x, however, it is obviously heavily processed with a cartoony look to it. Not the moody stuff they usually seem to go for, but the scene shot and processed differently might make it.

I would like to try as well. It is one of my goals on my profile page but when I lost all of my photos I sort of gave up on it. I don't have any photos to submit at the moment but I think I might have one I can submit in the near future.

Well I'm guessing its most likely from movement, because that's what makes sense. Every so often I get lucky and find a bird like this who loves the camera... He literally kept posing for me, so it made the shot easier... In fact, I have about 20 shots of him in this position, hindsight being 20/20, I probably could have found one where the tip of the beak is sharp but you live and you learn..

I didn't blur the background at all, in fact, I really didn't do all that much to the shot. Really I just sharpened, tonal adjustment, crop, and vignette. And just for the record, I had no idea what the purpose of the Vignette was, other than I thought it looked cool :) So thanks for the clarifying... That will help me with future uses.

Oh and lastly, thank you MargaretN for the vote :) I'm keeping my fingers crossed...

Maybe its just me, but I'm seeing some haloing around the branches... Not sure if that's from heavy processing, oversharpening, or my crappy monitor. Just figured I'd point that out, good luck!

I've got to agree with Spiff on this one. I like the shot, and would have voted it in the 6-7 range, but for 1x I think its a little too processed... Perhaps different editing may help, but if I were you, I'd submit this shot

It has great originality, tells a story, and has that sort of 1x feel... Just my two cents though, I haven't had anything published there yet so take it for what its worth :)

It really is a nice picture, and I'm glad it was a good moment for you (and the bird).

I have just gone through voting on 1x. I am amazed how uninspired most photos were! What happended? Did 1x lower the standards? If yes my photo could be within a chance!

Anyone hear anything yet??? I'm still stuck in the selection process so I'm keeping my fingers crossed... I'm going to try and go out on Sunday and take some shots so we'll see how that goes. Hopefully I can get some back ups in case my current shot gets rejected :)

Not a thing yet for me.

It's pretty easy to tell whether someone elses image will be accepted or not but I doubt I can tell if any of my own can make the cut.. Actually never considered sending anything to 1x because It hasn't occurred to me to try. And of course the first image that comes in mind is 4.something on dpc lol!

Edit:
Yup, just entered a 4.somthing on 1x.. if that makes it then.. woah

I know my pics aren't that good, but do I have anything that's even remotely 1x worthy?

2 - composition
3 - don't know

In position 3, I would suggest a verb. Sometimes if 1 & 2 are amazing it will pass muster, but there are so many submissions there unless there is an action going on to add interest, great light and composition just aren't enough.

1x seems to prefer a moody tone, and of this week's featured images, the 3 figures are all back to camera (though Christophe's joyous fence crasher is a bit of a departure) but take away the figures and I doubt they would be featured. If it is an amazing setting with great light, and you get your framing just right....either bring something to add an action or hope chance brings one along, because you really need a verb.

Hey don't feel too bad, I woke up and found mine too was rejected

So its all good, I may not get anything excepted there, but my real goal is to learn some new techniques to bring the level of my photography up... Whether that's in post-production or in the field, anything I can learn from this I'll gladly take... Sooo I'm going out Sunday, not sure if I'm shooting Landscapes or birds, we'll see how the weather and my mood goes :) In the meantime, I'm going to see if I can dig up a submission Details at 11 :) How is everyone else doing?

Do you get an e-mail or anything when they accept/reject your shot? I just keep checking and seeing nothing published in my profile yet.

you'll know when your rejected it says "not published" and sometimes it tells you why. They must be having a hard time deciding on yours.

WOW I've never been told why.
