What am I listening to? The talented photographers stating their POV? I actually don't agree with some of them and that's why I am annoyed because they repeat the same points over and over while missing the very obvious!

Margaret,

My own work clearly lacks truth. Personally, I'm going to take his message to heart. Thanks, Steve!

Only you can choose what you want to listen to. No one is asking for your agreement and I'm not here to argue any points one way or another. I'm just the messenger.

However, if you put all that beautiful energy into your submissions for 1x, I would venture to guess that your images would be published sooner rather than later.

That's my last two cents...;-)

Many great artists were misunderstood by their contemporaries so maybe I am within a chance? ;) (just kidding! not an easy thing to do at 5:30am!)

Well, the proof is in the pudding! Keep us posted on the results! ;-)

Definitely within a chance. A good chance. Your shots convey your heart. 'twas part of the reason I reacted so strongly on your giving up on the forest shot. Others might take that picture, but they probably wouldn't choose to submit it to 1x - not without a soul investment in it.

You know, I think I have submitted 9 photos over the course of the two years that I registered for 1x. Although all have been rejected, most shots were no where near the quality of what would be considered. Having said that, I know at least 3 photos went to member voting, which I suppose is where a curator sends an image to get more feedback right? And lastly, 2 of my images actually had comments. I had one comment from a voter, which was in Spanish so I don't understand, something about it being bright??? and the last comment was actually from a curator. It was on this image

The message read this,

"Message from curator:
Your picture has been evaluated both by the site crew and the members. The common decision was to not publish. "

One thing I can't understand about this site is why they comment on certain images like that. I mean, does that mean that perhaps this image made it a little bit further than just a quick rejection??? Or is it saying that, "We asked everyone, and they all thought it sucked..." LMAO... Ultimately, a rejection is a rejection, but the fact that the curator commented on it is a little consoling I guess...

Would this be worth considering for this side challenge?

Should I try to got down BrennanOB's suggestion and do a "Sex and Violence" (saxophone and violins) version?

I think your best two 1x possibles are these

Now take it for what its worth... I have never had anything published there, but I have been voting allot there recently. Perhaps there are others here who can chime in and give you some feedback too... Oh and on a side note, your android app kicks some serious ass... thanks again...

minus the border of course, they don't allow those right?

Just uploaded my "Military" entry to 1x. Resized it to the maximum of 950 pixels this time.

Strong personal appeal to the person at 1x who reviews it.

worth a try, but I would not keep hopes too high. Tried the same pier recently

...rejected without member screening. I am guessing, the pier might not be not pretty enough :)
06/17/2011 08:31:35 PM · #144
by the way, there is a rather visible halo in the sky and water around the pier. Try to fix it before submission, 1x does not forgive these things.
06/17/2011 08:35:47 PM · #145
Well this one is officially RE-JECTED :)

Its all good though, I was expecting it to be rejected, which always makes it easier...LoL... There is nothing more disheartening than having an image you think is great either score poorly or get rejected. The main thing for me with this shot was what I learned with editing... I'm still thanking urfathegreat and MargaretN for the editing tips. Ultimately this is more about learning and growing to get good enough to get a shot accepted on 1x, than just getting a shot accepted. I'm going out to the beach on Father's day so I may try my hand at street photography. Until then, I'm going to ponder my next submission...

I love this one! I voted it a 10 and fav'd it. I really like the human component. I don't know about 1x, but i would vote for it.

I like it too but I agree with LevT about the haloing. I'm not sure it is from processing or from the lights on top of the pier. I will have to see if I can fix it.

just entered what will likely be my third reject.
06/17/2011 11:31:23 PM · #149
Just entered my first (most likely reject) image....

I think I may use it for this months FS so I am not going to post it here... But wish me luck either way! :)

ETA: How long does it take normally for them to tell you that you were rejected? Or accepted?

I've been thinking about this process a bit and can't help but wonder about the process we set up for...when preparing for submission to 1x or just photography in general.

Steve Hill had this to add to the earlier post which I have to say really makes me re-think my own photography with a pretty cold hard look:

"Exploring the intricacies of a subject and looking at it so hard and finding out those small charming things that attract you in the first place is something that's hard to find, develop, communicate and takes some deep searching, even analysis... beyond seeing heavy cool colors, moody clouds, sharp bugs eye or whatever. Does anyone have some deep visceral relationship with waterdrops...bugs eyes...???

Maybe that's it..."shooting on a more visceral level"... most important, never, never shoot or compromise your work in order to please voters or to appease to the average viewer. That amounts to formula, "process" and if that's what you do, you will wind up with average looking work that doesn't offend, provoke, impact or hit with any strength. Concentrate on limited few topic or genres that you really, really dig and explore that sh*t out of them with passion."

Anyone have additional thoughts?
