You might consider going earlier in the morning. You'll meet more local "street" people than the later touristy and beach crowd which are also fun to shoot, but why not get the best of both worlds?!

I've shot there tons of times. I like going around 10:30 or so to get the mix of people. When you take pictures of the street people and that's all that's out there, the keep coming up to you to demand money from you. If you're shooting into the crowd, they don't see you as much and leave you alone :)
