With few exceptions so far, this challenge is full to the brim with snap shots. I'm not impressed with many shots here.

That is the nature of a candid shot. I feel it is meant to be a captured a moment in time, not a perfectionist masterpiece. I am trying to approach the voting that way and I am trying to give more weight to if a special or unique moment was captured rather than grading the technicals. It's a tough line to walk however, and I may revisit many of my votes.

I haven't followed the pre-rollover discussion but I am confused about what participants considered candid. I thought a candid photo must include a person/persons captured in a special moment that makes for an interesting photograph. Just capturing someone unposed is not enough.

you're kidding, right? Good candids are not posed, they are spontaneous. Or at least that's what I always thought.

Why did you think so? Where did this notion of a "special moment" come from? I had always thought that a candid was a photograph was un-posed and unplanned, immediate and unobtrusive. However the moments that can be captured are not limited, only that the subject be un-aware of (or at least not reacting to) the photographer. Some of the best candid photographs I have ever seen are images of people just sitting and thinking. IMHO candids are about celebrating the ordinary, not the special.

Misuderstanding? I said that just an unposed/spontaneous photo does NOT automatically make a good candid photo. I have taken it for granted that candid = unposed/spontaneous.

I would expect a lot of snapshots in this challenge. However with the editing rules, I expected some better pictures as a result.

can·did/ˈkandid/

Truthful and straightforward; frank.
(of a photograph of a person) Taken informally, esp. without the subject's knowledge.

Oh man why is this discussion happening, every one should know what a candid is :(

But true to what Margaret said, just photographing someone without them posing for it, does'nt always make a great photo, and there a lot of them in this lot. Only a few stand outs in this challenge.

This is true, but it's exactly what I thought before submitting. Taking candid shots we can't pretend to get wonderful shots or at least it's really hard to do it. And I'd like to say that this challenge is different from a street photography challenge. In that kind of challenge for me interesting situations are much more required than here.

ETA: my score is 6.18 (a couple of votes earlier I reached 6.38)

Same pattern of votes for me in every challenge: start with a bang, 6 and up with the first voters, then I drop in the low 5s to jump slightly at the end of the race. But that's for marks only as they come from the majority of voters. I do count on the minority.

I've been getting in to candids over the past few months and so was hoping for a 6+ score for this one. So far:

Surprised; I did think I was dismissing a more viewer friendly picture for the I one I entered.

Early voting was good but not great. Seeing a nice pickup this morning however. The comments say more more than the score.
