I've been wanting to do this for a while, and a thread earlier this week reminded me how necessary it is. I'd like to add some more-dynamic content to the front page. My plan is to allow you to select how many rows (probably zero to three) of one or two new dynamic features you'd like displayed on your home page. Candidates I've thought of are...

- Recently Commented-On Images

- Recently Added Favorites

- Featured Photos (Not sure how these would be selected... maybe by admins and site council members. The less democracy, the less difficult to code ;)

- Random Photographs

I'm a pretty big fan of recently commented-on. I also like site favorites, as I think that's a great way to show photographers and viewers what you like. Anyone have any opinions or alternate suggestions?

Ummmm, not sure what exactly i'm thinking, but something along the lines of a "welcome to dpc" that shows the first submission of new members?? Or something like that?

We do need a better 'welcome to dpc' section for logged-out users, but I'm talking about content for people who are here all the time and want something different to look at. I know there's more of you than just me ;)

It would be great to add the added favorites. And I also like the random photos idea.

Random idea is great because it will show more of everyones work.

What about instead of random photos (or in addition to) it shows a random user and their top rated photos. Yes, similar to PhotoSIG. It would help give exposure to those who haven't won a ribbon yet or don't participate in the forums, etc.

I like the commented on shots. I like random better than favorites because the favorites don't change that much.

The "featured photos" could just be the top six or eight (or whatever number you pick) of all the past challenges. Or you could use a cutoff point on the ratings - lots of democracy, and not (too) hard to code.

Regarding greenem's comment, you might run into difficulties since so many people just registered and never showed up again, having submitted one or no photographs. If you kept it to users who had at least two pictures submitted, though, that might be a pretty interesting feature - there have been many times when I've discovered a lot of incredible pictures just by clicking on someone's name and doing a little exploring.

A photography link of the day or week, suggested by users in a forum thread, would also be an interesting addition to the main page.

Good idea, by the way -

Right, but certainly one of my goals here is to promote more site activity. That is, I'd hope that those images on the front page would receive additional comments and favorites.

I am guessing that each "feature" essentially requires coding a database query. I think recently commented-on, random, and recently-added favorites would be the top three logical candidates to start with. But can you not continue to create new queries/features as we go along? Adding a new feature every month or two would also keep people's interest up.
Can you adapt the queries under the various "Browse" and "Gallery" options to grab just the top 3 records for display on the Home page?

I like the idea of random shoots, maybe with a suggestion that folks put comments on it... This way old shots get new comments...

If the "most recently commented" is do-able, that sounds great :)

Ummm, what about a selection of earlier photos from one of the photographers that has a current winner? If you feature 1 photographer a day, you'd get 1st 2nd and 3rd for both challenges in a week... Not sure how hard the code would be, but it's a thought...

Probably harder to code, but... Spotlight the photos of photographers choosen for giving the best comments... That might encourge more and better comments :)

Some sort of reward for more/better comments would be a wonderful addition to the site, whether it be front page related or not. Of course I have no ideas for how you could do that. = )

recent critique club comments. not sure how those would be distinguishable from other comments, but i really like to read those ...

What about "most viewed" shots? In other words, since I believe you're tracking the number of views per image, why not feature the day's most-viewed images?

Our view-counters are simply counters and have no date-of-view type date associated with them.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the purely random idea -- a lot of my own personal favorites on this site are either not winners or not among the majority when it comes to other people's favorites. So, any chance to look at work that hasn't "risen to the top" is appreciated. (And yes, I do know that there are still ways to find that on my own.)

Plus, I think there's something to be said for exposure -- both in terms of getting others to see your work, as well as looking at a wide variety of stuff. It might be the worst rated photo of all time, but someone shot it and submitted it for some reason. Doesn't seem a waste of time to me to look at it and try to figure out why -- even if I decide in the end that it's no good, or I don't like it, or it makes me ill, or...

In terms of other ideas -- I did like the old page banner that incorporated various images -- even though *sigh* none of mine were ever in it...

Tutorial/How'd... of the day/week. Doesn't have to be much more than a link.

How about choosing a random profile and some of THAT person's favorite photos. Instead of showcasing that individual's own work, you showcase submissions they like. That way 3-4 different people are highlighted all in one, plus you get a sense for what that individual likes and can apply it to comments they may have made on your own work.

That's a neat idea, Patella. Highlight users that have selected favorites. Then, that user, and their favorites get exposure. Did I interpret what you said right?

Yup. :-)
