I know this isn't the most amazingly finished photo but I though the composition was all right.

Anyway it ranked 145 out of 148 so to assist me improving my skills, I wondered if anyone cared to comment on this photo. It would be much appreciated. I am guessing it is a combination of it looking like it has just come out of a black and white photocopier and a child has colored the eyes and the fact that it may not be considered candid.

Any feedback much appreciated.

Thanks!!

Brutally honest comment left that I imagine will be a common sentiment.

The image is blurred and the selective saturation in not perfect. And I don't know if it can be considered candy. IMHO.

Left a comment myself.

Thanks for the honest feedback. I had a feeling playing with the saturation etc was a bad idea. Sometimes I should just not enter a contest rather than trying to scape together something suitable from my latest shots:)

Sorry about the honesty. Everything is only my´personal opinion.

Technical stuff:
- A LOT of noise
- Poorly cropped: The hands are too chopped off, not enough room around the head
- Poorly framed: One eye is "hidden". The bars are tilted in a bad way that disturbs
- Flat lightning: No drama in the light, no texture in the skin
- Not sharp
- Bad selective saturation: The blue is too much, it tells no story, and it is executed bad around the iris

Non-technical stuff:
- No story, nothing of interest. Don't get me wrong, but it's just another kid looking off camera
- What's the story behind the (VERY) blue eyes? I don't get it
- It's not candid. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the child is very aware that a picture is taken. Also, candids must contain some sort of "situation / action / shit happening". This is just boring
- The facial expression is not the best. I can't tell what mood the kid is in; again it's just boring

I appreciate your honesty and it will help me to improve my photography. The blue eyes idea was based on an idea I had seen on Flickr but very badly executed by me.

Really appreciated your feedback and happy now why I was ranked so badly:)

It's pretty bad, alright. So bad that I would have given it a seven assuming that you weren't serious.

The eyes are probably what killed you most. They've been so horribly processed -- I thought the child looked possessed! Not an attractive look ever, even less so for a child.

Other than that, there are some compositional issues, but these are second to the processing when it came to my vote.

Just a little bit to creepy for me.

I gave it a 6. I thought it had interest.

The eyes killed it for me. Moved on rather quickly.

I don't mind the amputated body parts or the tight crop, but the composition strikes me as an afterthought rater than for a purpose. However, the wild eye look could have been leveraged in to a very creepy image via post processing, even in basic. Think Jack Nicholson. With respect to candid... not enough visual context to generate a candid feel.

It's a good thing you entered, how else can you learn? As for the photo, for the most I agree with pederlol

..or if you do, don't question the results.

I gave it a 7. it was more interesting to me than a random crowd shot, but it could have been more purposeful and wider cropped, I suppose.
