Today's thrift store find is the Bratz Birthday 35mm single use daylight camera. That's right: I paid two dollars for a disposable girly camera with no film.

First thing I did was to take it apart to see how it worked; it's the flimsiest thing imaginable. It looks like it came preloaded with a 12 frame roll of ISO 200 color film. Maybe all disposable cameras work this way, but the film was fully unwound into a second cassette. As you take pictures, you advance the film back into its own cassette until you reach the end.

Well, it took some doing, but it's ready to shoot!

I have some expired Fujifilm here in 12 frame rolls. I took one and fully unwound it (in the dark, of course) but couldn't get it rolled back into the second cassette. So I put it aside and just wound the film directly into that compartment of the camera. I closed it up, taped it up (it must leak light in the worst way), and now I'm ready to take it to the street.

As I was taping it up, I thought I'd put a piece of tape over the Bratz girl face. Then I realized that would totally take the fun out of it.

hang it around your neck and start acting like you need to take some pic of possible targets.

has a nice bit of a grip unlike many compact raw shooters, not to mention the endowments...

Put a big professional camera strap on it to add effect :-)

Bratz. They are banned from our home, but I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I think they kinda look like the Roswell aliens, with those big heads and huge eyes.

Wholeheartedly approve of both sentiments.

So.. what are you wearing while out shooting?

you should so totally have a flash gun and reflector with you when you go out. Heck organize a model shoot in a busy street as well.

Then you can really tell the people it is not the camera that take good pictures, but the person behind it!!! lol

Have fun!!!

Oh, I like the way Juliet thinks...then have someone document your "shoot" while in progress, lol!

Me and the Ratz girl -- sorry, the Ratz girl and I had a wonderful lunch hour. Self consciously I did find myself covering her mutant Roswellian head more than once. Once when I didn't, I got the strangest look from a little boy. So I have a roll of film on its way to Target this evening.

It was a pretty dark and dreary day here in Pittsburgh. Fortunately I was shooting 1600 speed film, but that might not be enough. I tested the shutter and it's pretty inconsistent ranging from 1/125 to 1/200 -- much faster than I expected. Who knows what the f-stop is -- typically these cameras are f/8 or f/11 so that they can be "focus free." I'm expecting the negative to be a tad underexposed.

I thought of that except the weight of the strap would easily crush the camera.

The camera's a keeper! There might be a few mods -- first and foremost, the ugly girl must go. One trip out with her was enough.

Here are a few shots from my first roll, taken with expired, high-speed color film. Very grainy, but decent exposure for a dark and rainy winter's day in Pittsburgh. No light leaks, surprisingly, but I did have the seams taped up. The film sits funny, so some of the shots show film plane distortion. Reasonably sharp images, though, as these things go -- more evident on some other frames.

Pretty good shots, and certainly a conversation starter of a camera. :)
The one of the tree is actually quite lovely.

Lest anyone underestimate the power of the disposable, plastic camera, you should check out the work of Deon Reynolds, if you haven't already heard of him. Some amazing panoramic work using re-purposed, "disposable" Kodak Funsaver cameras.
