I have a business trip to NYC will have a little time to wander about and maybe visit a museum or two.

Suggestions? I should be available at sunset to do the top of the rock, as I did here during a similar meeting two or three years ago, but I'm also looking for other ideas in the Manhattan area. (Posting photos helps me decide too!)

Best museums/exhibits? Photography Exhibits? Is the International Center of Photography worth a visit?

[Yes, I've seen this thread...looking for some new suggestions :) //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=975229&highlight=nyc]

One thing I always like to do is to take the Staten Island Ferry (not in rush hour!). You get some lovely views (no pics on DPC to share apart from this that had a bit of work )

Neil

Obviously there are tons of things to see and do. Help us help you.

Where will you be?
How much time will you have?
Day or Night?
Do you want to shoot or just do stuff?
What have you already seen/done?

I'll have free time from 1 pm or so to 6 pm.

Looking for both photos and interesting things to see. I've been to NYC a dozen times or so, but never really toured around. So I'm pretty much a newbie to the city.

Trying to remember what I've done: I've been to the Rockerfeller center, toured NBC, been in Central Park, been to a few broadway shows, walked around Times Square, went to the statue of liberty when I was very young, and I've done one of those harbor tours a very long time ago. I may have been in the Met. Museum once, but I don't really remember. Probably.

I want to visit some art museum or photography museum. I love impressionism, and photography. I like other forms of art too, of course.

And I'd love to get some pics since I'll be available near sunset...my meeting is in the evening.

If you want to see art, I would suggest that in general the Met and MOMA trump the ICP

Other places to check out (sticking with midtown). Grand Central Station, NY Public Library/Bryant Park, Ice Rinks - Wolman in Central Park & Rock Center, Tickets to David Letterman Show (not easy to get and may run past 6), Macys (just to see the sheer size of it). If the weather is reasonable, just wander around on foot, it's amazing what you will come across. If you have some extra time on your trip even later in the evening - go to McSorleys Old Ale house for a few pints - the inside is a treasure and history lesson.

If you have the time, I would head down to the Brooklyn Bridge. Simple subway ride away.

Nearby the Brooklyn Bridge is the South Street Seaport & nearby 17 Bond Street / Pier 11 - views of docks, boats, yachts, Brooklyn Bridge, people, shopping (interesting markets of various types). Speaking of Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Museum is interesting, and has a fair number of changing exhibits in addition to its Egyptian art and mummy room.

My favorite NY thing is the Staten Island Ferry, but it would probably take all your time, and leave you disappointed, feeling like you've wasted an opportunity. It would be a nice ride after your meeting, if there is time, with great views of lower Manhatten on the return trip. Be careful, though, that you can catch a ferry back if you go later at night - they used to stop running at midnight, and you probably don't want to spend an unexpected night on Staten Island. ;-p

If you like architecture, City College of NY has some interesting buildings. Union Theological Seminary is near CCNY and also has some interesting architecture.
