As the title states I'm trying to choose between the D700 and D3. I would like some opinions on this and would really appreciate it. The price tags of the soon to come D800 and D4 as well as the D3X or more than I can bite off right now.

Thanks!

Quick response would be that unless you really need the extra fps that the D3 offers, you'd get more bang for your buck getting the D700 and putting the money saved toward good glass. But I don't own a D3, and have never shot with one, so...

What do you want to shoot? If you're into heavy action, high speed type images, then the D3 is your camera. Otherwise, the D700

lets break the tie properly ... canon 5D MkII ... enjoy!

To answer your question Tanguera I plan to use it to shoot wildlife, nature, aviation, and autoracing. I might every once in a blue moon shoot some portraits with it but nowhere near as often as the rest of it.

As for the 5D MkII, while I started out on Cannons a long time ago and still have a 40D. I have a few full frame lenses already for Nikon so I really didn't want to have to buy all new lenses as well.

Sounds like the D3 is your best choice

The D3 is def. the right choice based on what you want to do with it. I've had a D3s, D3, and D700 and no matter what anyone tells you, real world use of the D700 and D3 there are worlds of difference between them. UNLESS you are just doing general photography and studio.

Thank you for the replies, I really do appreciate it. I think I'm gonna go with the D3 then.

If you can afford the D3, you will never regret the purchase....

Uhm no I have it on good authoritay that the 5D MarkIII is da bomb, in terms of Canon gear. Meanwhile I also back the D3 purchase. Need to upgrade but whether it'll be the D800 (36 mp seems excessive - oh the noise!) or the D4 all depends on winning the lottery :-)

Having owned the Nikon D3, I can attest that it is a wonderful camera. I can recommend it if the price is good - less than $2500. I have the D800 on order and hope to get it in three weeks. Several of my friends own the D700 and love it, but I fear that we are about to go through a major paradigm shift with an array of high resolution cameras hitting the market from Sony, Canon and of course, Nikon. Even Nokia announced a 41 megapixel camera in their new cell phone. So, low pixel count cameras will become very old, very fast.

My Sony NEX-7 arrived yesterday and my first impression is that with over 24 megapixels it delivers stunning images. All of my older Point and Shoot cameras just became antiques.

Therefore, my recommendation is to purchase the lower cost of the two, likely the D700 now that the D800 is imminent. Whatever you buy, you should expect to flip it out in the next year or so as the paradigm shift takes hold of the industry. It is time to "catch the next wave" and that is one based upon high resolution or high pixel count over 20 or 30 mp, not less.

Have fun with whatever you decide to buy.

If you look carefully at these test results for the many cameras and sensors, you will see that the D3x is still a major achievement and a winner that has the potential to carry on for a while longer.
