I swore I just posted something here... or did I put it somewhere else?

Anyway, Scott - can you explain how your listing works? I can't quite figure it, but I'm guessing it has to do with both score and the number of entries? Maybe if you could post an explanation on the website itself it would save people like me asking each time. :-)

Thanks!!

Yeah, I'm not getting it either, but since I am a spot ahead of Bear_Music, I'll just accept that I am better than him. :P

1. User are ranked in two categories, Average and Score.
2. The ranking is percentile based. Just like when you view you profile page, it tells you what your percentile was for the challenge. If you had the highest average your percentile will be 100% and the lowest Average percentile is 0%.
3. Users score is their average score * Entries.
4. The ranking is percentile based, just like #2 states.
5. Your Average percentile and Score percentile is added together and divided by two. This gives each user there YTD percentile compared to other users that have entered challenges.

Looking at the above screen print I will explain how users are ranked.

AllenP, which is in 1st place has a year-to-date average of 6.7338, however, that's not the highest average year-to-date so his percentile is 97.07%. The highest average is 7.4546 (bvlindalou) so his percentile is 100%.
AllenP has entered 18 challenges with an overall average of 6.7338 so his Total Score is 121.2089 (AVG * Entries), for a percentile of 96.56%. The highest Total score is 188.5265 (vawendy) so her percentile is 100%.
No I add AllenP two bvlindalou categories together (97.07% + 96.56%)/2 = 96.82%.

So the scoring system is relatively easy.

(AVG Percentile + Score Percentile)
----------------------------------- = Total Percentile (which users are ranked)
2

Hope this helps. Any concerns?

Scott

Is this done to balance out those who enter more or something? I guess I just don't understand what all the math is for. Interesting, though!

Maybe it is because I like mathematics, but I understood how it works and I find it really interesting!

So the average percentile is not based on a particular challenge, but overall and comparatively, which can ge skewed by those who enter only one or two challenges and do very well. The score percentile is the same thing but weighted by the number of challenges entered and based again against the whole, not a particular challenge. Am I close? And if this is the case, what is the advantage of taking the average of these two numbers?

I'm trying to figure why someone like Wendy, with the highest consistent score (score average x number of entries) is further down the list?

For instance: Wendy's average score is lower than mine, but her overall position is better. This stats are IMHO a perfect balance of what happens in the challenges.

If I was to just take the average percentile and rank users on that, it would be skewed. It would not be fair or accurate to say an user with the highest average with only one or two entries deserves to be number one. At the same time it would not be fair or accurate to say an user with the highest score should be number one. They could have entered all the challenges but have a low average.

What works best is to rank users by average and overall score, then divide it by two. That way each user is getting a fair assessment in how they average, enter challenges, and how their average over x-amount of challenges deviate. As we know it is harder to maintain a high average as you enter more challenges.

Is langdon the best photographer at dpc because he holds the highest average, no! that's why I can't go by average alone.
Is GeneralE the best photographer at dpc because he has entered the most challenges, no! that's why I can't go by total score.
But if I give each of them the percentile they deserve based upon their peers average and score then you have the more accurate assessment of how each users compares to there fellow photographers.

Thanks, Scott! I understand much better now. You've put a lot of thought and work into this, thank you!
