Just an idea, so don't get too out of shape about it :-), but maybe we could throw the rule book out of the window for a week and have a manipulation challenge, where we were allowed to play with photoshop or its equivelants for a week. You would be able to do anything you wanted in order to create an image.
I know this is a diversion from the challenge criteria but I see some wonderful photographers in here and I would be interested to see just how creative they could be if given total freedom. I suspect that there are a few graphic designers, art students, computer wizards in here who would love to show off their work to This particular community. I myself like playing with PS7, although I am a complete novice. I would enjoy looking at some of your ideas and maybe learning how you did them. It would be a good learning experience and maybe an enjoyable one for those who enter. Also maybe it would level the playing field for some people. They might not be great photographers but they maybe brilliant at photo manipulation.
Yes I know there are other sites for this type of thing but I am interested to see how names that I recognise and respect would deal with it. Like I said, Just an idea ;-)

Dogman,

this discussion has come up a few times in the past. There is a group of people who are interested in this, but when it gets down to the nitty gritty, a challenge of this type is a challenge for photoshop gurus rather than for photographers. This spirit of this site is more on the edge of photography than photography manipulation, and I believe this is the reason a challenge of this type has never surfaced...

Firstly, thanks for the reply.

Secondly, Point taken, just an idea.

Pity we couldn't have a gallery section in here where people could submit stuff that may not be part of a challenge, for review. If it had a 7 day expiry time on each photo then it would not get too clogged up and would allow us to see ideas from all genres.

Currently, I post stuff to my pbase gallery and then link it here when i want a critique or comments... I did that with a photo this moring. You can do the same thing if you have something that you would like to show... I like seeing work from other people that is not challenge related :)

I agree with John. We have talked a bit about this subject before and it goes to what John said. Trying to keep the site as much about camera handling as possible.

That is a very important function of this site. I believe too many people rely too heavily on digital manipulation and we are losing a whole generation of camera professionals.

My goal here has been to submit as many special effect shots as I can create with a camera as I can. To get back to the way photographers used to create strange photos before digital imaging got so cheap.

I am the graphic design person for my daughters high school sports program and I tell the students this all the time. If you can get as close to your vision in camera as you can the end photo, even a digitally manipulated one, will be that much better.

Besides, it seems the first thing many people do with programs like photoshop is add 10 filters, 20 lens flares and generally muck up a good photo anyway :-/

Hehe..don't know if they are fair but they are all I got!!

I hope folks do work with photoshop though..Take my Asphalt Mirage on the road challenge photo.

This is totally workable in photoshop..as a matter of fact..I did a photoshop remake of this photo at the above address alongside the original.

Both are interesting in their won way.

The original has the ripped photo and the impact of totally real photo.

The Photoshop image has that "painting" feeling to it.

I like them both :-)

I'd be interested in seeing a thread each week after the topic is over with before / after images... This is what we did with just the camera, this is what it looks like after printshop. But if it was for a challenge, I'd have to sit out a week. I'm a complete klutz with Printshop and all my images are abstract neon blobs if I try to do anything besides resize and maybe color correct.

Here's a example from the FEAR challenge. Nothing too fancy -- just a series of 3 tone curves, crop, and rotate.

GeneralE..I REALLY like the originals.

I admit that I had a hard time figuring out what I was looking at in the edited version.

I have a TOTAL FEAR of heights. And your''s was the only photo of heights besides the winner and I didn''t know it due to your edits which removed my fear!

Thanks! :-) I do like it a bit better but that is because it is closer to the vision I had when I first started to gather my props and stuff together.

My point in this thread is that by forcing me to come as close as I could to my vision IN CAMERA I actually had a better photo to edit in the end.

I also gained more photographic experience in the process than doing all of it in Photoshop. I have a catoloque of stock photos I could make this image from. But then I wouldn't have learned near as much or maybe I would have lost that "3D" quality.

Many of my photos are "works in progress"..stuff that I intend to use in other work. Even my 'Fraidy Cat" photo was part of a photo shoot to develope some images for my wife and our show cat hobby.
