Wow, I hadn't heard of her before. Her work is so bizarre, I love it! I'm down. Been peeking in every so often over the past few months for a challenge to inspire me, this might be it!

The more I look at her work , the more I dislike watching her pictures...
Sorry, but not my cup of tea.

I am quite excited for this one! My kiddos should get a kick out of my attempts, at least. Plus a homeschooling lesson on women in history...

Hey guys - and any women who don't care for her work - just. don't. frickin. enter!!! The rest of us will probably have a lot of fun, however.

The Museum of Modern Art in New York held a comprehensive retrospective in 2012, which is generously documented on the museum's website including commentary by the curator. Well worth a visit to gain an appreciation of her work. I think this might be too difficult a challenge to participate in unless you are a woman or have a very cooperative model. Or maybe just a hyperactive imagination.

Why do you say that? Her work wasn't just self-portraits. I realize that is the basis of it, but there is more to her work if people dig a bit. Anyone could attempt this challenge.

VEry helpful links.
Considering the androgynous look in many of her images, a man without too much facial hair - or in some cases - WITH too much facial hair, could pull off an homage.

For those who aren't "into" these images; I think that is sort of what the images were about. A conventional setup where we come to see conventional, predicted beauty - then there is just something off - something uncomfortable, something troubling. I hope photogs really go out on a limb in this one.

you do not need a woman to shoot in the style of Cindy Sherman.

This link will show you her most famous work:

https://www.google.com/search?q=cindy+sherman+film+still&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi8_tO4x6fLAhXryIMKHZqbCR8QsAQIHw&biw=1680&bih=925

They look like film stills, but there was no film, just the photos. You can do that with any models, or possibly candids.

But even her other self-portrait work doesn't require a woman. Often, she herself doesn't look like a woman in her work.

perhaps this will help:

become something else and take a portrait of that

My advice, for what it's worth:

Forget about the scores on this one, forget about trying to anticipate what the voters will be likely to reward. Instead, immerse yourself in Cindy's work and bring that experience into some experiments of your own, without regard to the rest of us :-) "Dance as if nobody's watching" would be a good motto for this challenge...

ETA: what Posthumous just said :-)

Even though it is counter-intuitive, when something really grates me the wrong way, I find that digging into why that is produces some interesting insights. I may not "like" a particular body of work, but I always learn something by digging a little deeper.

Nothing wrong with expressing an opinion, even if it does run counter to that of others.]

If the whole world pulled in the same direction... it would tip over. :O)

Nothin wrong with expressing an opinion, Unca Raymee, but is it really necessary to ruin things for everyone else with other opinons in the process? No.

Or how about this one: Untitled Film Still #67, Tribute Series: Cindy Sherman by John Sloan.

That's about my best hope of entering this challenge as I don't usually do portraits.

I don't particularly get this one.

I look at her photos and I'm less than impressed. I don't understand it. I find many of them repulsive.

After reading the wikipedia entry -- I still don't get it. It seems like there are so many better options for the things they're seeing.

Yet, I'm amazed that I never, ever thought to simply have a mirror by the camera when doing a self portrait. I always guessed, chimped, got annoyed, tried again. How simple, and yet how brilliant.

I also found this fascinating:

She explained to the New York Times in 1990, "I feel I'm anonymous in my work. When I look at the pictures, I never see myself; they aren't self-portraits. Sometimes I disappear."[15] She describes her process as intuitive, and that she responds to elements of a setting such as light, mood, location, and costume, and will continue to change external elements until she finds what she wants. She has said of her process, "I think of becoming a different person. I look into a mirror next to the camera…it’s trance-like. By staring into it I try to become that character through the lens ... When I see what I want, my intuition takes over—both in the 'acting' and in the editing. Seeing that other person that’s up there, that’s what I want. It's like magic.”[6]

I hate doing self portraits, which is totally because I'm not comfortable with my looks. But what an eye opener. If I'm doing it -- it's not about me, it's about the photo I want. If I can take myself out of the self portrait, how awesome.

So yet another example about how the challenges you don't like can teach you the most if you only try.

(ok, now that I've said it, I will admit that I like the untitled film series. But If I said that in the beginning, this post wouldn't be as interesting. :)

Thanks for the challenge suggestion!
