So, lets stir things up this morning. Just to say first off, I didn't enter the challenge and didn't vote it either, so it's not like I have hurt feelings or anything. And it's a gorgeous shot (nothing personal to the ribbon winner). But, I don't understand how the blue ribbon could be considered a Still Life. Anyone care to explain? Or is this just a case of "pretty picture" syndrome where it doesn't matter?

Why do you think that the image is not a still life?

From Wikipedia: A still life (plural still lifes) is a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (food, flowers, plants, rocks, or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, and so on).

Because I see nothing here to suggest an arrangement. This could have been taken outside with a piece of yellow paper behind it with these growing out of the ground. I'm not looking for a fight, just an explanation. I don't have any art background/schooling. Many years ago when I was still fairly new here I did a similar shot for a still life. I received all dnmc comments. I'd have to go searching to find it but it stuck with me. It wasn't done as well as this. I was still pretty new, using a p&s and didn't know how to pp very well. But I learned from those comments that that a simple flower shot is not a still life. I'm going to go searching for it and I'll post a link.

eta: Ok, found it. After the comments I received on this picture, I won't ever again shot flowers for still life. I generally avoid still life's at all cost. LOL. So I was just surprised to see a flower shot take the blue in a still life contest.

It could be also a matter of lighting for subjects like flowers. This one reminds me of the still life paintings of the past and don't consider it DNMC.

But I'll wait for your image to compare it :)

I had no idea a still life was an arrangement....maybe that explains why my tulips were apparently so underwhelming....yeah, that must be why ;- )

Kelli - Even though most people consider flowers as a legitimate still life subject, I think most people expect that the subject also be "arranged" - typically indoors. While the current blue ribbon entry could have in fact been taken outdoors with a portable background, it appears to me to be indoor lighting. You're previous entry is obviously outdoors and most voters probably assumed in a garden. If it was potted and you brought it indoors for your shot I think it would have scored better. Just my opinion.

LOL. It was potted, but I took it outdoors because I didn't have any lighting at the time. I guess I just really don't get the whole still life concept. I'll just continue to avoid the subject. ;D

I have more of a question about the third place shot than the blue, it seems like more of an abstraction than a still life. But it's awesome and I would have voted it a 9 or 10 anyway. I don't care too much about the DNMC stuff as long as it can be tied in at all I give the person the benefit of the doubt that to them it met the challenge.

The DNMC crowd gets too carried away sometimes. To me the challenge descriptions are just a jumping off point to give us some inspiration, to others ilthey seemto be more of an assignment given out that must be strictly adhered to. To each his own.

Coming to Kelli's defense here, I have studied Still Life painting and looked at a lot of "still life" work in galleries and museums.
And I agree with her. As far as a traditional still life is concerned, many of those in this Challenge would be unusual fits in this category.
Wikipedia is a fine and sterling source, and there were fine examples given. Had one gone to google Images it would have been possible to see even more examples of what this genre has consisted of through the ages.

It looks as if we might have a new category: "Non-traditional Still Life"

Having artists as friends and taken art history courses in college, I tend to agree with you Kelli. Some of the images in the challenge didn't seem like still life images of "an arrangement of objects" to me. Fortunately, I didn't vote in this challenge. :-)
