Has anyone suggested "surprise" previously?
Just popped into my head.
I like the photojournalism idea given before, too, and specific colors like you did "red" before.

My suggestion for future challenges is topics that are very concrete. Not opinion based such as corporate world. Something that you can shot no matter where you live, so that we don't have to resort to set up shots.

OLD, YOUNG, BIG, SMALL, COLORS, LANDSCAPE, DAY, NIGHT, UP, DOWN, AROUND THE HOUSE, IN TOWNS, PARKS, MAIN STREET, NATURE, ANIMALS, MOODS, PEOPLE, ETC...

If we stick to shots that have a lot of freedom but can be seen without a problem when looking at the photo, there would be a lot less complaining and criticism.
Stick to the challenge and no one will get the dreaded " didn't meet the challenge".
There will always be a few out there that prefer to shoot 'out of the box'.

That would be boring....We'd all be rating rope or cats

Not necessarily - but this weeks photos are about as boring as you can get. Come on if I see another picture of a newspaper I'll scream. You don't call that boring?

are they ALL boring, Terry???

Think of this week's photoes as submissions for an add campaign. Concept pieces and metaphores. aelith

I'm in ageeement with TerryGee. Most were boring in the fact that many images did not reflect the theme if they didn't have a title. I feel the image alone should say "I'm corporate America". A picture of of a toilet is a picture of a toilet. Pictures of newspaper articles are pictures of newspaper. The images we create are language and should speak for themselves. The titles are langaippe.

No magnetic they aren''t ALL boring, just too high of a percentage of boring. It makes the voters get so tired that they don''t bother really looking as hard at the pictures. Yes mine was a set up. I''ll admit that. Didn''t have time to travel to the city for a skyline, or great building shots, etc. But I at least tried to make it technically good. That is all I had. So it would be better if we did not have to go to the end of the earth to get the beautiful shot( lets face a great corporate shot was not in my back yard). A more general topic would not necessarily be boring.
My concern is that all the shots that are set up this week are getting low scores - but if they are good technically and stand alone without their title they shouldn''t deserve the low scores.
I''ve gotten 18 comments so far -even some 10s,only 2 neg.comments and yet a crappy average. Why? I think I am penalized for all the other bad set up shots.

What's wrong with set-up? Out of 15 submissions so far, only 2 of mine aren't set-up to some extent. If you don't set it up, doesn't it qualify as a snapshot? :-)

Kimbly our messages crossed, but as I said I think all the set ups are getting lower scores, just because there are so many.
My frustration this week is that there are many ideas VERY similar to mine. But the pictures aren''t, so should I be knocked down for a similar idea? It should just show that we were all on the same wave length

Well, some may not be technically great and some may be rehashed..but....

When I see a challenge that REALLY challenges people like this one I would feel that it would be in peoples best interest to have MORE of them..to help them to improve their conceptual thinking.

All I know is I didn't have time to shoot all the ideas I had and not one of my ideas included a newspaper or toilet seat..so see..those ideas were new to me :-)

I don't know. There are always a lot of set ups in every challenge though. Just because of the difficulty, like you mentioned, of getting to a place or lucking into a shot in the short challenge period. A bad set-up is just as bad as a bad snapshot, but I think there have been many many high scoring set-up shots. Take a look at the top 8 shots on the site favories menu. All except 1 perhaps are set up.

a) "set up" well vs "set up badly" is a consideration. just "set up" or not on it's own isn't a criteria for judging a picture, imo.

b) i like the the less concrete challenges as well as the more concrete. there's a reason it's called a 'challenge.' these CHALLENGE people to use their imaginations :).

c) if some pictures are boring, then that makes the good pictures stand out more and easier to determine the winners. maybe the people who struggled to come up with a shot can learn something from the more interesting ideas.

d) it also didnt occur to me to do something wiht the toilet or the paper. most of my ideas revolved around the guy with the top hat from Monopoly :).. (which I didnt end up doing).

I had ideas ranging from monopoly money, to pink slips, a persons hand on the bible and his fingers crossed behind his back (but religous symbols seem to scare some voters), a paper shredder ( I can't BELEIVE I didn't see one of those!!), a mercedes parked next to a shopping cart, two dogs licking each others butt (don't ask!!!)

I had a list......:-)

To hijack the thread back to where Karen started it, I think ''suprise'' would be a good topic, although those that live with me would probably disagree after Monday and Tuesday''s attempts to ''suprise'' them...

To hijack the thread back to it''s current topic, I think ''Corporate World'' was a great topic which stretched a lot of folks abilities and imaginations. In fact I''m kind of surprised by all the forum chatter about how bad the shots are... I scored 6 shots a 10 and 2 or 3 of them are likely to join my favorites. I think some of the problem is that voters are also having to stretch their abilities and imaginations and that it''s a slightly more painful process then they are use to..

NOTE : After rereading this post, I would like to apologise in advance to anyone that thinks I am refering to them when I talk about voters without well stretched abilities and imaginations. It was not my intent to imply anything... Post void where prohibited... Restrictions may apply.

Sorry hokie, err, I mean Mister Hokie... But if you went with this you would need one HECK of a title to tie it all together :)

I had A LOT of titles for this one!! My neigbors in my 'hood' seem to like to own dogs but seem to like to let them free roam like coyotes. Two in particular park their carcass in my neigbors yard across the stree performing numberous acts of carnal knowledge. They would really get down to it just as the kids school bus would roll up!

Some of my titles for the butt licking.

"Bush and Ken Lay"
"AOl-Timewarner..Together at Last"
"Less Filling!-Tastes Great!"
"The Catholic Church"
"Doublemint Challenge"
"Wall Street and Investors"

I think you get the idea >:-)

I actually tried the shredder shots, but they came out terrible. My other ideas included expensive cars, and boats, and prizon.
Didn't use any of those.
