244 images and stalled at 75 votes... That's about as pathetic as voter turnout at election time...

I've gone back two years in free studies and the results show that Entries vs Voters has consistently been below 50%. Only a meagre 44% of those that entered images actually took part and voted...

The worst so far (in 2 years) was in August 2010 where only 36% of entrants took part in elections! (sic)

Instead of casting low votes, vote fairly... SC sent a me a request for the original of my entry. Dear voter, I spent so many time and put great effort to take such images - instead of searching for non valid entries, go to a bookstore and buy some useful stuff...

... ok, rant mode off.

That's cool and all, still doesn't mean they have to like it.

If you edited it within the rules set, what is the big deal about submitting the original? To be honest, I am one of those that on occasion puts in requests for validation during voting. If validated and the SC feels warranted, they often will put a 'this photo has been validated' stamp at the bottom of the entry. This way, it helps the submitted photo in getting fair votes.

And to your point, it is worth reminding that a voter that votes an entry low because they don't believe it is following the rule set isin violation of the voting rules....

Of course. The problem is not the score, but how people don't analize the images.

I got one of my worst scores here with my most difficult image. It didn't have any artistical value and it deserved that score.

I have to document this. I have two 6.4 scores at the same time - this and The Moon. I don't think that's ever happened before!

Alessandro, I submit images for validation and I'm also happy to submit originals when asked. I did submit a couple of images recently, and I voted as if it were legal and left it to the SC to figure out. Given the otherwise high quality of one I specifically remember, I wonder if I know which was was yours.

I don't "search for non valid entries," but when something strikes me as off, that's what the validation request is for.

Your comment makes it seem like you seem to resent being asked for validation.

People do make mistakes, and there are DQs in most challenges. We also have new people who join and enter without reading the rules carefully or they don't understand something. I'm not talking about slight misinterpretations, but common errors like adding copyrights, doing spot editing in a basic editing challenge, and compositing multiple photos because those things are often legal on other sites.

BTW, getting asked for validation usually makes me smile because it means I pulled off something that at least one person couldn't figure out. For example, this shot was 100% legal and was validated during voting, despite the significant color shifts and it being basic editing:

To tell the truth I feel partly angry but at the same time proud :)

But only when I have a very complicated entry (I guess Gyaban has been asked several validations for some of his old entries). This was not a very easy shot, but at least something that people should understand is completely legal. Otherwise it would mean that I deliberately tried to deceive someone. But as I already said, I'm talking exclusively of this FS shot.

But my original post was not a way to complain of the validation request or of the score (I'm between 6.2 and 6.3), but simply the fact that some people don't analyze the shots they vote.

That's all :)

Asking a photo for validation implies that the person that requested it is actually analyzing the image....

I'd say that this happens as well, but no more than 50% of the times.

EDIT to add: I mean, taking a second look doesn't mean analyzing an image.

Analyzing my image is very easy to understand how I did it :)

How many of the voters do you really think have the same technical abilities you do?

I wouldn't have the foggiest idea how you edit your images.

Actually, the more skilled you are at it, the less likely someone else will be able to decipher the method(s) you used.

I guess we'll see, Alessandro.

I did think hard about what struck me as off about the photo I'm guessing is yours.

I also have quite a bit of experience w/similar shots; frankly, someone *not* analyzing it probably wouldn't have wondered at all.

Remember, too: there's a huge variety of experience and skill here. And few people have in-depth knowledge of a wide variety of photo types. Still others might not realize the legal possibilities (for example, that even within basic rules, radical color shifts are allowed).

Finally, no one knows it's you, or that you're careful.

In short: don't assume that what you think obvious is obvious to everyone.

It's not a matter of editing in this case, but of how I have done it when I shot.

The point is: try to understand how I've done it instead of losing time contacting SC.

When I came here for the first time I spent SOOOO many time doing it and I learnt a lot of things :)

WoooHoo finally got a comment from a voter who actually felt the emotion I was trying to portray. Thank you. Photo has come a long from its 4.5 start.
