So, the current version of Lightroom doesn't support the RAW files that come out of my RX 100.

Adobe has released a Release Candidate for both ACR and Lightroom. I thought I would only need to install ACR to allow for my current version of Lightroom to be able to read the RAW files but either I'm not installing it correctly (Doubt it) or I need to install the Release Candidate for Lightroom...which seems like a pain...kinda...

Am I wrong? Should Lightroom support the files with just the updated ACR?

Nope.
The ACR update will allow Ps to open the RX100 files, but not Lr. Installing the Lr Release Candidate is an option, but I would warn against using the 4.2 RC in place of the released (4.1) version. So that means separate catalog, temporarily, for RX100 files imported using the release candidate. The sidecar files should still be understood by 4.2 when it's released, so at that point you'd uninstall the RC, install 4.2 and import/move the RX100 files to your main catalog.

I had a similar problem with my new camera - I just used Adobe DNG converter until I was able to update Lightroom. So I had a couple of shoots that are catalogued as dng rather than raw but I can live with that.

Yep, no loss of quality, gets you a readable file now. The only potential fly in the ointment is if you want to use any of the shots for DPC, the DNG is not an original. If I were doing this, I'd make sure to embed the RAW file such that I could re-extract it later. Downside is, twice the space.
