so my contract is up and i am able to upgrade to a new phone, i currently have Samsung focus windows phone. i am probably the one person is the world who loves the windows metro(formerly) interface.

i have an andriod tablet and soured on android completely until recently, my wife has had an htc android phone for over a month now and its great, never crashes, is fast, reliable, etc. nothing at all like the POS tablet.

the new windows 8 phones come out at the end of this month, specially the nokia which look sweet, so do i wait or should i jump to android now?

after watch some videos im kind of underwhelmed by the improvements windows is making, sure they are nice and an improvement over the current iteration, but it still "looks" the same, i think I want some flash, some customization, and i think im tired of supporting a platform that developers are still ignoring.

if i do jump ship to android what phone should i get? im on ATT btw.

I'm an android girl. My last phone was the Droid Incredible by HTC which I loved. Right now I have the Droid Razr. It's just ok. I like the phone itself, but there are some annoying things with it. Sometimes the sound just does not work unless I turn the phone off and back on, even though the volume is up. And sometimes it gets really super hot for no apparent reason, and then I have to turn it off for a little. Also, sometimes I just don't have any data service, and I know that's my phone being dumb because I could be in the same room with other people with Verizon, and they have service. My husband has the Samsung Galaxy III. His phone is great, and he has no problems with it. I would recommend the Galaxy.

if i go with android its with going to be the galaxy III, HTC One X or the Motorola Atrix.

Don't go off on some anti-Apple rant, but there's a reason beyond the fanboy hype that the iPhone is so popular.

Status symbol? The phone is fine, if a little low end on specs. My problem is the intrinsic belief that its customers are so ignorant that 'welding the hood shut' is seen as a beneficial idea.

I would go for the SIII.

The SIII is $100 more than the HTC and i trying to decipher if its worth it.

and yeah, i didn't list an Iphone for a reason. Apple is too busy playing catchup than leading nowadays.

I don't know how many times I've seen people with SIIIs with cracked screens. Are the screens very brittle on these or something?

I've dropped my old samsung feature phone loads of times, and the screen is always fine.

I should probably buy that waterproof ruggedised dumb-phone that nokia sell. All I use them for is the alarm anyway...

Why do you want to get under the hood of your phone? So you can tweak it into a brick-like state?

Maybe the customers are not "ignorant", but happy that they can't accidentally open the hood and make their phone do some nifty trick it wasn't designed to do, like folding the laundry. Only now they can't call grandma without having the phone play Justin Beiber for her when she answers.

I've had android phones forever...
had an iPhone 3g a while back...
REALLY want to go back to the iphone, but I still have a while left on my contract before being eligible for an upgrade. so until Aug 2013, I'm stuck with this POS Samsung phone.

well i did it, i ended up with an HTC one X.

really nice phone. fast sleek, great screen.

a few thoughts:

I miss windows phone. maybe becuase i was so used but everything just seems so easy, it all integrated really, really well, i was always aware what was going on, when i had email, when i had a text, when i had a missed call. the live tiles were perfect. right now i hate that the mail app doesn't tell me that i have an email and my gmail account and other emails accounts are in two separate inboxes.

I just wanted something new for the next two years and i envision myself going back to windows after it matures more.

I hate AT&T, i found out that they installed a firmware on the that keeps me from rooting my phone or upgrading to Jellybean or at least getting Google now before they want me too. After the wp7 fiasco and now this, i may be switching carriers in the future.

"Car mode" on the phone is brilliant, i dont know why this wasn't implement earlier and often by others, its genius how well it turns the phone into a navigation/speakerphone/music player with beautiful huge icons and a driver friendly interface that doesn't distract you from the road.

while i miss wp7 phone it is nice to be able to have all the apps/games avaible, the phone is extremely customizable and its nice to be able to turn it into a fully automated personal assistant, which i expect to work even better once i get the jellybean update.

I saw a car run into a bus yesterday. Didn't even slow down. Phone, I'm guessing. Didn't look like he passed out, so there's not a lot else that distracts you that much.

its more for controlling the gps and music, not any more distracting than a normal radio. btw, texting isnt even an option in "car made".

Get comfortable with AppBrain app market. The default design has its flaws but you can customize it to suit your needs. My opening screen has alerts for mail, texts and missed calls with optional sound/vibration alerts. The windows phone has some great features, but you can find the utilities you need in the vast choices of freeware out there.

I doubt you need to be warned, but since you are on an open platform security is your job. I like Lookout mobile security, but whatever your choice, don't run without some security.

The best thing about android is you can customize the whole experience to whatever works for you. It may take a bit to figure everything out, but if you really delve into it, I doubt you'll be going back to windows.

You can change your launcher, which will completely change the entire look and feel of the phone. If the one it came with isn't suiting you, there's quite a few out there to google. I have an Evo 4g, also HTC, and am pretty happy with how they set the launcher up.

All notifications (email, text, calls) show on the top bar, which drags down for more details or to quick jump to the app that notified you. There's also widgets, which are interactive home screen icons. Text message can show how many unread texts you have. Same with email(althouth I don't think the default gmail has a widget, probably have to go 3rd party).

I use Handcent for the text message widget.

And the 2 best apps that will never leave my phone. I'd recommend them. both free.

Display Brightness
Allows you to change the brightness level from within any app

Auto App Organizer
Will automatically categorize your apps. I use it to put a folder on my home screen that contains all my games, can also be done for any other group you want together.

as a side note, if your gmail ever stops syncing make sure the low space icon is in the notification bar. Took me far too long to figure out that was why I wasn't getting emails ;-)

I've been responsible (as the Director of IT) for all mobiles for three companies and choice of models. My experience is that iPhone users we never hear much from, while we need to help Samsung users fairly often with a less intuitive interface and 'weird' issues. One user complained his language switched from Norwegian to English. Looking in setup it said "language: Norwegian" IN ENGLISH! lol... Had to reset the telephone for it to display the same text in Norwegian.

The Samsungs has also been in need of service more often -- in our case. Problems with the charger jack in the phone (gets intermittent) and phones that are doing unsolicited shutdowns/reboots. The glass has been proven to break more easily in iPhones. But in real life, we replace more glass on other smartphones since more iPhone users tend to use protective covers on their phones. Lots of cool designs I guess...

The SIII is IMO too big as I carry my phone in my back pocket all the time. Bigger is not necessarily better.

Performance data that users don't notice (for example marginal processing speeds, display resolution etc.) is of no interest to me.

I can't speak for everyone. This is only my own experience. In the end it's personal preference.
