You'd think the world would have the decency to end on a Monday. :-(

Uhm just as an aside (great challenge suggestion btw)...the Mayans were big believers in enemas.

Especially those involving hallucinogens. I won't go into detail but once I was sick to need to use a *pill* in the place where the sun don't shine, and it worked.

So let's take a whole bunch of Mayan ancients and elders, stuff dried 'shrooms and gawd knows whatever else up their asses, tell them to put together a Kosmic Kalendar, and let's see what shakes out.

Oh yeah and in THEIR version of 2012, what happened? The Spanish arrived with horses, armour, smallpox and unquenchable greed. That would pretty much bum me out, too,

So...Mayan Prophecies? Pshaw. Amateurs. Hey, I survived Millenium! Planes, satellites and any computer running Windows '98 crashing all around me! I'm a frickin cockroach! I can live through anything!!!!! The next age will be the age of snaffles!!! Muwahahahahaaaa....;-p

I realized you were getting up there in age, but damn you are pretty well preserved for being a Millenium old............I'm just saying.

Love the idea...

Obviously the submission deadline would have to be on or before the 21st - couldn't have the world ending without seeing all the entries!

A challenge like this would be timely. Mother Earth is striking back.

Almost to the minute of the last full moon, Superstorm Sandy came onto the New Jersey shore.

The upcoming penumbral lunar eclipse of November 28, 2012 presents an interesting event. The Mayans would have known about this one.

We're even having earthquakes in NJ now (right in my own town)! //www.philly.com/philly/news/new_jersey/20121124_Mini-earthquake_in_N_J__jumpstarts_Black_Friday.html My husband was watching a show about the Mayans and the end of the world predictions last night. I was shocked at the amount of people who actually believe it.

I've seen some wildfires in my part of the country which are unbelievable. I didn't see them coming. We are not in a normal pattern.

I can add some fuel to the fire, so to speak. Four days ago, a giant solar flare erupted.

Why would you prep for the end of the world?

Here's a real question for you Slippy... do you think fracking for gas has anything to do with the earthquakes happening in areas that they've never happened before? I read a report, don't remember where now, that implied this.

To add my 2 cents...in all honesty, I think the whole end-of-the-world thing can be attributed mostly to two key factors:

1)Advances in scientific equipment delicate enough now to detect changes in the earth, solar system etc that before we were all unaware of; and

2)Being told about all these changes as soon as they happen. This is the age of information and all the good/not-so-good facets of the interwebz. Anything at all can be put out there - be it idle speculation, hardcore fact, gossip etc - and before you know it, it's everywhere. It's the so-called Butterfly Effect, in action. Just because there's a webpage or Facebook site for it doesn't give it validity. But sadly, a frightening amount of people seem to treat everything on the web as the unquestionable truth. Hey, I know people who freak out if they lose their phone. Talk about needless panic.

And no, I'm not a prepper. If the world comes to an end, it comes to an end. Simple. Even if there are some survivors, I'm willing to bet the internet and everything else will be down for the count.

@ Kelli...hey, dig deep enough for gas, starting messing around with enough explosives and drilling and yeah, I would think sooner or later the leading edge of the nearest tectonic plate might have a problem with that. Look at how *newsworthy* it is when houses go cascading down a hillside after a heavy rain. Usually a hillside denuded of trees, whose roots helped hold things together, until they were felled and uprooted. Soon ground turns to mud and eh wala, the outcome is always cited as a natural disaster, not sheer blind human stupidity, which it normally is.

*off to rally my cockroach troops*

I'll be looking forward to the Ken Burns documentary.

The earth quakes every time our feet hit the ground, I suppose it's a matter of scale. Fracking has been linked to very small, shallow quakes. Real quakes usually originate much deeper than frackers can drill. There are over 1,000 natural earthquakes every day.

IMO, the benefits of fracking far outweigh the effects of any little quakes they may cause. But there is always the possibility of something weird happening from a little shift at the surface. I wouldn't recommend fracking near towns which have old, buried gas lines, or use well water.

I don't claim a lot of knowledge in the area, as I've always been in exploration, and now mostly the business of exploration.

If you can tell me which earthquakes in particular you mean, I can give my opinion on them. I'd simply try to find the USGS event page for the quake and look at the depth of origin, and whether it is near a deep fault zone. Maybe even rock type at the depth.

Cory has some geo background, maybe he will pipe up if he sees this.
